Periwinkle burst outside and into the morning sunshine. Laughing and rolling around outside, she was glad she'd left the stuffy den before the rest of the family was up.
"Periwinkle!" Her father's loud, and stern, call caused her to pause and pin her ears in nervousness and frustration. Now she was gonna get it. He appeared at the entrance with narrow eyes and a twitching tail. "What have I told you about leaving the den unsupervised?" He asked sternly.
"To not to..." Periwinkle answered, head ducked in embarrassment.

Emberpaw got to her paws and stretched out. She followed her mate and kit out into the morning sunshine, absorbing the warmth in her pelt. She watched as Radge disciplined Periwinkle for leaving early. "It's dangerous out here" she mewed "and we don't want you getting hurt."
Dair slowly followed his mother out of the den. He looked around nervously for any danger before emerging completely. He shook his head as he watched Periwinkle being disciplined for leaving the den, yet again, without supervision.

Periwinkle groaned. "You are always talking about danger and yet I see nothing." She said, kicking a rock. "We've been coming out for a couple moons now and we've never seen a fox, or a dog, or a badger!" She argued.
Radge was getting worked up, nightmares still fresh in his mind. "Well trust me, you don't want to!" He said.

"Be thankful we haven't" Emberpaw mewed. She shuddered at the memory of the last dog attack, when she thought she was going to lose Radge forever. She unconciously leaned closer to Radge, letting the calm feeling of being close relax her.

"You two are so boring! And cowards!" Periwinkle argued, earning a glare from her father.
"Back in the burrow Periwinkle, this instant." He meowed, his eyes darkening dangerously.

Emberpaw bit her tongue. She restrained herself from yelling some emotion fuelled comments at her kit. Instead, she let Radge handle it.
Dair just watched the exchange, his head hung slightly. He didn't understand why Periwinkle didn't listen, it was obvious that the woods could be dangerous.

Periwinkle had had enough. "No!" She said, running off. she just paused a little ways off, glaring defiantly. Radge stood there stunned a moment, then looked at Emberpaw, unsure of what to do.

Emberpaw rolled her eyes. She ran after Periwinkle, fear and uneasiness pulsing through her. "Periwinkle come back" she mewed. She couldn't stand the thought of losing her daughter.
Dair watched as his sister dashed off. He let out a sigh at her rebellious actions. He never understood, no matter how many times she tried to explain it, the appeal of disobeying.

((She stopped not far off.))
Periwinkle just dodged around. "You have to stop treating me like a kit!" She said.
Radge looked over at Dair. He liked his obedient son. He loved both of his kits, but Periwinkle made him gray with age.

"We're trying to protect you" Emberpaw mewed. "You don't know whats out here" she added.
Dair shot a small shy smile at his father. He didn't really say much, prefering just showing how he was feeling rather than vocalizing it.

Radge smiled back. "Want to hunt?" He said, deciding to leave the she-cats to it.
Periwinkle sat down crossly. "Why does he had to be such a spoilsport. Why couldn't you have fallen in love with someone else?"

Dair smiled. "Sure" he mewed in his quiet tone.
Emberpaw's heart broke at Periwinkle's comment. How could she say that about Radge. "He's trying to protect you" she mewed "he cares about you a lot." "And he's done everything for us" she said "so maybe you should learn to respect him." "And I love him because he's my everything" she added sternly before turning around and stalking away.

"He treats me like a newborn kit." Periwinkle muttered.
Radge noticed Emberpaw coming back and sent her a sympathetic glance. If he knew Periwinkle though, she'd be back to her attention-seeking self after she cooled off a bit. He looked back at Dair. "So, show me how you stalk a rabbit."

Emberpaw sent a look of frustration at Radge. She couldn't believe her daughter's attitude.
Dair watched as his mother stalked towards them and shook her head at Periwinkle. He returned his attention to his father. He got into his hunter crouch and stalked quietly and carefully forward. He was about to pounce when he lost his balance and landed in a heap.

"Keep your paws up more, and keep your tail lower too, it'll help you balance." Radge mewed encouragingly, wishing there was something he could do for Emberpaw. He didn't know how to treat Periwinkle, who was so different from her brother. She was a good cat, but not exactly obedient.

Dair nodded. He once again moved into his crouch. He made sure to keep his paws up and tail low as he stalked forward.
Emberpaw turned just before her mate and son and headed to the side of the burrow. She layed down and took a deep breath. She just didn't understand her daughter and it frusterated her.

"Good, now try pouncing." Radge said. He wanted to go check on Emberpaw, but didn't want to leave Dair hanging. Being a father was confusing at times.
Periwinkle just lay a ways off from everyone else, feeling miserable like she always did after a fight. She just didn't understand what dangers could possibly exist out here.
((Idea: Peri gets hurt somehow and Radge and Emberpaw leave to get get Flameheart and leave Taz with the kits but Taz's owners follow and take Periwinkle and Dair and somehow Snowdrop's owners get Peri before the parents get to them.))

Dair nodded in understanding. He bunched his hindlegs before leaping. He managed to land with only a minor stumble.
Emberpaw wished that she knew what to do about everything. Mom, help me she prayed, looking up to the sky.

"Keep practising for a moment, I'll be right back." Radge told his son, hastening around to where Emberpaw was. He licked the top of her foreheard. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Was I too hard on her?" He was beginning to doubt himself more and more. Could he do anything right?

Dair nodded. He turned his focus back to his crouch, and tried stalking again.
Emberpaw smiled as Radge came up. She nodded in response to Radge's question. "You did what was right" she mewed. "I just wished I knew a better way fot getting through to Periwinkle" she said honestly.

"She'll learn... eventually." Radge said. "Once she's face with a real danger - " He was cut off as his daughter screamed.
Periwinkle wasn't paying a lick of attention. That was how the fox snuck up on her. He lunged at her and she was caught by her scruff, crying as he shook her, hard. Then she was tossed a few tail-lengths away. She didn't have the energy to get up, and even if she did, she didn't knew what to do. She was cursing her foolishness for staying so far away.

Emberpaw heard her daughter's scream and her blood ran cold with fear. Please let her be okay she preayed, getting to her paws. She raced back in the direction of Periwinkle and froze when she saw the fox.

Radge didn't hesitate to throw himself at the fox and rake his claws down it's eyes. It was stunned and, being only a young adult, wasn't prepared to take on more than one of them, so it turned and fled. "Periwinkle?" Radge looked over at her and walked over slowly, praying she'd be alright.

Emberpaw was rooted to her spot, watching the exchange between Radge and the fox. She wanted to jump in, but couldn't make herself. She sighed in relief when the fox turn and fled. She quickly turned her attention to Periwinkle. "Are you alright?" she asked.

Periwinkle groaned as she tried to move one of her forepaws. "Ow..." She said, unwanted tears springing to her eyes.
