The sounds of the camp seemed very muted from within the den. When the she-cat's senses began to reemerge, she was left feeling dazed, unused to the strange silence that lingered in the air. Blinking open her eyes, Shadowcross saw that she was, in fact, in the medicine cat's den. Realization struck her almost as hard as the car that had injured her shoulder. She planted her face on her paws, trying to stifle a moan of pain. She didn't want to be incarcerated in the den forever, so she had to pretend she wasn't feeling the injury as much as she was. Sitting up, she tried to position herself in a way that didn't hurt, but it was difficult. In the end she accidentally tore open one of her cobweb bindings. Her wound had stopped bleeding, but it was still susceptible to reopening. Shadowcross sighed and lifted her good paw to try and reach the wadding of cobwebs that the medicine cat had left beside her nest.

A snowshoe tom emerged from the warriors den, stretching his muscles out. He looked around camp and headed towards the medicine cat den, holding the she-cat he wanted to see. Tidalwave looked in the den, noticing Shadowcross' struggling. "Hey, how are you feeling?" he asked as he slipped into the den.

Shadowcross wasn't surprised to see Tidalwave. After all, he was the cat that had saved her. She almost wished she could be snappy and ask him how in the name of StarClan do you think I feel?! but she didn't have the heart to anymore. She owed him a great debt, and she hardly felt any of her normal animosity towards him. Instead she felt a sort of closeness that she couldn't quite explain. Indeed, she really wished she could talk to him as she used to, for while she always had witty things to say before, now Shadowcross just felt tongue tied.
"I feel quite well," she replied finally, not wanting Tidalwave to see any sign of weaknesses. She wasn't sure if it arose from her old feelings of resentment or this new feeling of... gratitude or whatever it was. "I'm sure I will be out of this den and back on duty in no time." She meowed with a false bravado that was quite convincing, or at least it was to her own ears.

Tidalwave waited as she thought about her answer. He knew she wasn't going to tell him the truth, but he asked anyway. He shook his head at her reply. "I know thats not how you're feeling" he mewed "you know it's okay to lean on someone sometimes." "Did you need anything?" he asked. He felt bad for the she-cat and wanted to help her anyway he could.

Shadowcross felt some of her old anger rising up inside of her.
"I think I've leaned on you quite enough," she said curtly, "And no, I don't need your pity." She muttered, knowing that he only felt sorry for her, and that's the only reason he was there visiting her. He feels bad that I was harmed on his watch. She thought, disliking the idea of any cat feeling sorry for her.

Tidalwave rolled his eyes at her stubborness. "Well it's a good thing you don't have my pity, you have my concern" he retorted. He really was concerned for his enemy? friend?, he didn't quite know what to label her anymore.

Shadowcross looked up at him skeptically, trying to decide whether or not he truly meant it. Finally she sighed and felt her anger melt away.
"Sorry," she muttered, "I'm just cranky I guess. It's not very fun being cooped up in such a stuffy place." She looked around her at the store of bitter-smelling herbs and sighed. Turning back to Tidalwave she managed to give him a small smile.
"Thank you for saving me." She meowed quietly.

"I understand, I hate it when I get stuck in here too" he mewed. He mentally celebrated the small breakthrough he had made. "You're welcome" he mewed, smiling at the she-cat. "So do you need anything?" he asked again.

Shadowcross smirked slightly at his persistence.
"Maybe some company, if you've nothing else to do." She said, much to her own amazement. Just a day earlier she would have shivered at the thought of spending time with Tidalwave. "It gets rather lonely here." She added, as if feeling the need to explain her strange request.

"Well I was planning on spending time with this one she-cat, but I guess you'll do" he said, a teasing tone to his voice. A smirk was present on his maw. Tidalwave felt oddly comfortable in Shadowcross' presence, when just yesterday the thought made his pelt crawl.

Shadowcross let out a soft mrrow of laughter.
"I'm sure you have a lot of she-cats chasing after you," she meowed with a slight smirk in her expression and tone of voice. But a small part of her wondered if her words weren't true. Tidalwave had always been the popular type, she supposed - that's why she hadn't liked him very much, mostly. Or that's the only reason she could think of.

"Maybe, but theres only one that I like" Tidalwave mewed. Honestly, he hated the she-cats that were always throwing themselves at him. He wanted someone to talk to that didn't just want him, that was one reason that he had always kind of like Shadowcross. She seemed to be the only she-cat not throwing themselves at him, and he liked that.

Shadowcross stared at him for a few moments, wondering why she felt so horrible when he said that. I bet she's a lot prettier than me... The thought was odd, yes, but Shadowcross couldn't really suppress it. Shaking off the idea as best she could, she managed to say;
"Oh yeah? Who might that be?"

Tidalwave's blue eyes went wide. He froze in his spot, he was at a loss of how to reply. "Well, uh, um" he stammered. It's you he said in his head. He wanted to hit himself for acting like a mousbrain, why couldn't he just act cool.

Shadowcross smiled slightly.
"Sorry," she said, "I guess it's none of my business. But seriously, whoever she is she'd probably be happy to have you." The words hurt Shadowcross for some reason, but she spoke them anyway. What's going on with me? She thought sourly, I thought I didn't care what Tidalwave did? So why am I feeling so bad now? She couldn't decide what was happening, but she didn't really like it.

"No it's okay" Tidalwave mewed. "Besides, I don't think she feels the same way anyway" he added, a sad tone in his voice. It was a lot easier when I hated you he thought to himself. But i'm glad you at least tolerate me now.

Shadowcross let out a soft huff.
"If that's the attitude you're going to take, then of course you'll never know if she does, mousebrain. If you really care for this she-cat you should tell her so. Maybe you'd be surprised." She said. A part of her wondered who could ever not like Tidalwave. But then... I've never liked him. She thought. But that was because I was being petty. I thought he had it better than me and was just gloating about it. But he's really not that bad. Looking up at him, she wondered why she was feeling all of this now, when it was so useless.

"But this she-cat's never really liked me before" Tidalwave mewed. Please get the hint he thought to himself. All this talk was painful to him, to have her so close, but to not be able to confess his feelings. Why can't I just tell her flat out, I've never been scared of my feelings before he questioned himself.

Shadowcross tipped her head to one side. She wondered what other she-cat - other than herself of course - had ever disliked him. When she thought of it, Shadowcross couldn't really pin down any she-cat that would fit the description.
"Well feelings change," she said. "Yesterday I wouldn't be caught dead talking to you and yet here we are." She smiled at him in a surprisingly friendly way. Or perhaps it wasn't so surprising, considering how she was beginning to feel around him.

Tidalwave smiled at that comment. Maybe she was getting it he thought to himself. "That's true, maybe the she-cat does like me now" he said, looking directly at her. "My feelings for this she-cat have changed rather rapidly, I used to dislike her" he mewed. Please, please understand he prayed.

Shadowcross's smile faded a little. He was looking at her so intently, she felt her body squirm almost on its own accord. He can't mean me, can he? She thought, disbelieving that it could ever be true. Why should Tidalwave like her? She'd done nothing but yell at him since they were apprentices.
"So then what changed your mind about her?" She asked quietly.

Tidalwave could practically hear the gears turning in Shadowcross' head. He could also tell she figured it out, but doubted it greatly.
"Well I've been spending a lot of time with her recently, and I found out she's different than I thought" he answered. "I discovered than she can be nice and that shes curious and it seems her opinion has changed as well" he mewed.

Shadowcross looked at him for a moment and then smiled.
"Ah," she said. "Well I'm sure she feels the same. After all, we've been thrown together quite a lot lately and I have definitely changed some of my opinions." She tipped her head to the side and a small smile flickered across her face.

Tidalwave felt his chest explode with happiness. He smiled brightly at her, ecstatic that she finally understood. "I'm glad" he mewed, moving closer to her. He was tempted to nuzzle her, but he though that it might have been too soon, and a little awkward.

Shadowcross felt him move closer, and her heart seemed to stutter in her chest. So I was right. She thought happily, looking up into his eyes and wondering at how quickly she had fallen for him. Perhaps, in a way, she had always admired him. It was jealousy of his popularity and easygoing way that had blinded her for so long. It seems as though all it took was for him to save my life. She thought a bit smugly.
"So am I." She meowed softly.
