The smell of peaty soil filled the tom's nostrils, leaving on his tongue the tangy taste of Leaffall. It was a notable taste, and reminded him of a good rainfall, which was not a bad or a good thing really. Padding through the undergrowth, the black and white tom twitching his tail happily, feeling more energized than he had in a long time. Now that he had found his mate again, he could suffer no discouragements or disappointments. As long as Cookie was by his side, Sighingwind was content.
Glancing into the brush, Sighingwind wondered where exactly he'd buried the squirrels he'd caught earlier. It was a rather annoying thing to have to search for them, but he figured it was his own fault for not marking the place more clearly. The tom sighed, feeling loathe to keep searching. He wanted to spend time with Cookie, but it seemed that his prey was determined to hide itself from him. Sniffing in the bushes, the tom finally picked up the scent of squirrel through the damp Leaffal scents. He followed the trail and emerged into a clearing, where the two squirrels lay buried. The tom dug them out and then made his way back to the den he shared with his mate. Feeling content, Sighingwind lengthened his stride so that he could be with Cookie sooner, his mind wound up in thoughts of her even though his mouth watered at the slight taste of prey in his mouth. What did he care for food when he had someone like Cookie waiting for him?

A tortoiseshell she-cat lay stretched out on the floor of the den. Her forest green gaze was focused on the entrance, waiting for her mates return. Cookie wondered what was taking Sighingwind so long, she hoped he wasn't hurt. She had wanted to accompany him hunting but he refused and told her to wait in the den.
Please be okay she prayed silently, she couldn't lose him now that she had found him again.

Sighingwind made his way back to the small, comfortable den he and Cookie had made for themselves. It was a humble place to live, but he liked it just fine. It was warm and dry, and it would be a safe place to raise kits. The thought of their first litter made Sighingwind feel a little morose. He missed his kits, but he still hoped that there would be more. Slipping into the den, Sighingwind made a soft noise to let Cookie know he'd returned. Winding his way into the inner structure of the shrub, the tom smiled as he laid eyes on his mate. He set the squirrels down in front of her and stooped down to brush his muzzle against hers.
"Good morning, my love," he meowed happily.

Cookie's ear pricked up at the soft noise coming from the front of the den. She knew that it meant Sighingwind had returned and she smiled brightly. She was relieved when he finally came into view, carrying squirrels and appearing unharmed.
She brushed her muzzle against his when he leant down. "Morning" she mewed, her tone light and cheery.

Sighingwind curled up beside his mate, glad of her warmth and company. It was lonely, sometimes, being by oneself. But having Cookie with him was enough. She was all the companionship that Sighingwind needed, and he loved her more than he had ever loved anything.
"I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long," he meowed, giving his mate's ear a gentle lick.

Cookie relaxed into her mate's body that was curled beside her own. She felt content just laying there with the love of her life. She purred in response to the lick placed on her ear. "Only long enough for me to think you disappeared again" she mewed, her tone teasing.

Sighingwind looked at his mate steadily, his eyes serious.
"I would never leave you again. Nothing but death will part us." He meowed, burying his nose in Cookie's shoulder. He sighed, reveling in the feel of her presence. There was nothing he loved more than his mate. Nothing could replace her in his life. Without her, he was as good as dead.

"I know" Cookie mewed. "And I won't even let death part us" she said. She felt her mate bury his nose into her shoulder and she began to purr in response. "I love you" she mewed.

Sighingwind sighed contentedly.
"I love you, as well. With my whole being." He meowed, drawing a tongue across his mate's ear affectionately. He had often wondered as a young cat whether or not he would ever find something like "true love." But sitting with Cookie at his side, watching the way the light seemed to be swallowed up in her soft fur and reflect off of her brilliant eyes, he could feel no doubt that this was the type of love that every being lived for. And he was grateful that she had given it to him.

Cookie smiled as she felt Sighingwind lick her ear affectionately. She had no doubt that this what they had was true love. They could sit in silence for hours and be content. And they proved that no matter how far apart they are and how long they are apart, they will always find each other again.

The content with which the tom embraced his mate could not last forever. He knew that the hours of the day were passing, and that there was work to do if they were going to find a permanent place to live together, hopefully far away from Cookie's twolegs, if he had anything to say about it. The thought of them taking her away from him again tore at the tom's soul and made him fretful. He didn't want to leave Cookie, ever, if he could help it. Her presence was like a soothing balm to the wounds on his heart--without her, he was nothing.

Cookie snuggled closer to Sighinghwind before speaking. "So what did you want to do today?" she asked. "As much as I love laying here with you, I think we should do something" she added.

Sighingwind smiled slightly.
"Anything. A walk, perhaps? Maybe I'll catch some fish for you in the stream? As long as I'm with you I don't care what it is we do." He meowed, turning over on his side to look into her face with big, kit-like eyes filled with love and warmth.

Cookie pondered his suggestions for a moment. "A walk sounds wonderful" she mewed. She met his kit-like stare, with her forest green one. "Shall we go?" she asked, getting to her paws.

Sighingwind rolled onto his paws and shook his fur out. With a gentle smile he moved aside and with a sweep of his paw, said, "After you," adding a debonair smile for effect. He knew he probably looked comical but he just hoped to make her smile. When she smiled, the whole world seemed to be better off. He would do anything to make her laugh and be happy.

Cookie smiled brightly at Sighingwind's gesture, she loved when he was carefree. "Why thank you" she mewed, dipping her head. She padded towards the entrance of their den, her tail waving behind her.

Sighingwind padded after Cookie. The open air of the forest was comfortingly fresh, and he liked feeling the ground churn softly beneath his paws. Glancing at his mate, the tom couldn't help smiling. There were few times when seeing her face didn't make his world all the better. It might sound cheesy to other cats, but after being forced to live without Cookie for so long now that he had her back she was everything to him. Sighingwind would cherish every moment he had with her for the rest of his life.

Cookie slowed her pace to match Sighingwind's so she could twine his tail with her own. She always felt happy and at peace with him by her side.
"Do you think you could maybe teach me how to fish?" she asked breaking the comfortable silence.

Sighingwind turned to his mate with an open expression.
"Sure," he meowed cheerfully. "It's not too hard, though it takes a bit of practice." He curled his tail more tightly around Cookie's, feeling comfortable and happy--more so than he had been in months.

Cookie smiled brightly at her mate. "Maybe its not too hard for you" she mewed "but I can barely catch a mouse on my own." She had a feeling that as long as she was with Sighingwind, he would teach her how to hunt properly and how to fish, since her lessons got cut short before.

"Well, I was raised to fend for myself," Sighingwind meowed. "I wasn't so great at anything when I was young. It takes practice. And I'm sure you'll pick it up quickly." He guided his mate towards the ravine, where he knew a river would greet them, filled with fish. He was glad that Cookie was showing interest in learning to live out here. It meant, he thought, that they would be able to live together, out in the wild, where they would never have to fear separation again. At least not by cruel twolegs. Sighingwind would never separate from her again. He couldn't survive it another time.

"Well you taught me how to catch mice, so if anyone can teach me to hunt, it's you" she mewed. Cookie followed Sighingwind's lead, allowing herself to be led towards the ravine. Must be a good place for fishing she thought to herself.

"You are a good student," Sighingwind meowed cheerfully. The two cats walked to the bottom of the ravine, where the river was tucked into the canyon's depths. It trickled past thickly, swollen with the rains of the season. Sighingwind padded up to the edge and sat beside it, beckoning with his tail for his mate to join him by the waterside.

Cookie smiled. "Maybe but you're a better teacher" she mewed. She followed her mate to the side of the river, eyeing the water a little nervously. She hadn't expected the stream to be so wide.

Sighingwind saw Cookie's nervous expression and touched her shoulder with his tail reassuringly.
"Now," he meowed abruptly, "The first order of business is to be conscious of your surroundings." He moved a little closer to the water so that his shadow fell across the surface.
"What am I doing wrong, do you think?" he asked, looking directly at his mate.
