Deathwing watched Wildfire's thoughtful face with an attempt at solemnity, but he couldn't help smiling a little at her musings. He drew his tongue across her cheek gently, letting out a warm purr.
"Never mind," he meowed with a grin. "Being secretly cute is better than being secretly a dog so I'll take what I can get," he teased.

Wildfire let out a feminine trill of amusement and happiness in her throat. She sighed and leaned into her shoulder. "Should we go back to camp?" she asked. She wasn't quite sure if she wanted to, now that she thought about it. She felt like she would be walking into camp a different cat, hot with embarrassment at each glance of her clanmates, whether they were judging her or not.

Deathwing smiled slightly.
"They'll begin to wonder if we wait too long. Let's go get our prey and get back." He meowed, giving Wildfire a playful nudge on the shoulder. The tom felt content, more so than he had in a long time. Most of his life he'd been seeking to prove himself worthy of his Clan, but now there was no thought of worth or pride in him. He could only think of Wildfire, and the way she made him feel. For once in his life the doubts and the questions were pushed into the background, replaced by someone much more important.

"Oh, that's right. I forgot." she meowed in embarrassment. She had originally come out to hunt when she had found Deathwing in the fields, which felt like an eternity ago. How long ago had it been? It wasn't long after sunrise that she had gone to the border of Thunderclan to think...she glanced at the sky and saw that it was much past sun high. In fact, the sun would be setting soon. While they had caught two rabbits, one rather large, it was hardly enough to show for an entire newleaf day, wasn't it?

Deathwing was too distracted with his thoughts of happiness to consider how his Clanmates would react to the rather pathetic offering of prey the two warriors would bring in, considering they had been out and about for quite a long time. Still, as he walked alongside Wildfire he did wonder what the Clan would think of the relationship. They'd never appreciated Deathwing's presence much. His parentage was unknown, so he could be a kittypet or a rogue's offspring for all any cat knew. Would his Clanmates like the thought of him taking a mate? What if there were kits? They wouldn't be fully Clan-blooded kits, he supposed. Would the Clan treat them coldly at times, too? The thought dampened his mood a little. But he wouldn't think about that. That was the future. For the time being he wanted to appreciate the present. Deathwing and Wildfire collected the two rabbits they had caught and began the trek back to camp. Worry gnawed at Deathwing as they neared it. He wondered if the Clan would be able to tell right away. But should he hide his feelings? Why would he do that? He supposed, though, he didn't want his Clanmates to think illy of Wildfire. But why should they? Perhaps it would be best to follow her lead, though. He was used to the remarks, the snide comments, but she wasn't, probably. So he would wait and see what she wanted to do. Yes. That would be a good thing to do.

Wildfire glanced back at Deathwing and noticed his eyes clouded in deep thought. "What's wrong? Do you think we should wait to tell Storyteller?" she asked with a frown. She paused and for the first time considered that Storyteller might not approve. It would be awful after how much he wanted her to have a mate that she would pick a cat he disapproved of...but was that possible? Didn't Storyteller just want her to be happy?
Memories trickled into Wildfire's head--she was beginning to remember now some distrustful comments her clanmates had made long ago when Deathwing was training to be a warrior...how he had been looked over for some important tasks in the clan that he had surely earned. She almost felt like a stranger to her clan...she had spent so much time not wanting to get close to anyone.

Deathwing glanced at Wildfire and then looked down at his paws. He didn't know what to say. He didn't want to hide their relationship, because being with her was the best thing that had ever happened to him and he wanted to shout it out to StarClan, if he could. But he was worried about Wildfire. Would cats really dislike the match? Did that matter? Deathwing sighed softly.
"I don't want to hide it," he meowed quietly. "But I'm not sure what the Clan will think. Or if that matters. I guess I'm not used to things happening... I don't know how to react." His forehead creased slightly in thought.

The fur on Wildfire's back stood up like a flame for a moment, then settled as she thought some more. Tom's in the clan had always shown interest in her, but she avoided letting any tom believe she was interested. Even Northstar had shown interest in her at one point...she flattened her ears, thinking about how disrespectful she must have come off to her own leader. Would other cats in the clan be jealous or angry that she had chosen Deathwing? I don't care. She thought, the fire in her fur beginning to fill in her chest. It's not like he's in another clan, or that I am breaking a code. It's my choice.
Wildfire walked up to Deathwing and rested her forehead against his. "If they can't handle it then we don't have to spend any spare time hanging around them. To Starclan with what they think." she whispered. His presence was so gentle and strong...he felt so different from everyone else. "I like you because you are different...everyone else is...well...boring." she concluded with a gentle smile.

Deathwing stared back into Wildfire's eyes. Her gentle voice and her kind words strengthened him, and made him feel... well, loved. It was a new feeling, in some ways. He'd always felt that Shallowstep and Sablefrost had loved him, as if he were their kin. But sometimes he'd wonder if he had disappointed them, or if they were embarrassed of his lack of skills. When he was with Wildfire, though, he didn't feel as if she were judging him or expecting anything from him. She looked at the good side of him, and he felt the same way towards her. All he could see was how beautiful she was, how kind, how spirited. Nothing she could do would make him feel any less for her. This feeling was welcome to Deathwing, and he thought that he could face any troubles so long as Wildfire was at his side.
"No one else has ever made me feel like I truly belong before," he murmured, brushing Wildfire's flank with his tail, "Thank you, Wildfire." He gave her ear a gentle lick and then smiled.

Wildfire beamed, then frowned. "But why should your own clanmates make you feel like an outsider?" she shook her head in frustration. "There is so much mistrust and edginess lately...at first I thought it was just between clans, but now I feel it may be within them to." she let out a feisty growl of frustration. "Things just don't feel like they used to. I can't tell if it's because I am older and my responsibilities are greater and more demanding as a warrior or...." she paused for a moment. "Well, things just felt so differently as a kit. Always thought I could conquer the world, and that fights were only ever noble... I am not sure if such thoughts were kittish and should be abandoned, or if it is in some way a sacrilege to give up on those feelings and that is why life feels so tense right now...have too many cats given up on the ideals and influence we dreamed of? Has that made us mistrusting and bitter?" she wondered.

Deathwing listened, as he usually did. He didn't really have an answer to the questions that Wildfire was asking. He'd never much cared to question why no cat trusted him, even though he'd grown up in the Clan and had worked his hardest for them ever since he could remember. What didn't matter to them. They wanted their pure blood, their Clan blood. In the end, that's what mattered to them. Deathwing had never approved of the sentiment, but he understood it. The tensions between the Clans made it difficult for cats to venture beyond the place they felt most comfortable. In a Clan, WindClan blood or ThunderClan blood or RiverClan blood was what mattered, because it gave the cats within the Clan a sense of security. Deathwing turned to Wildfire and listened as she talked about her days as a kit. He had been less idealogical as a kit, he had to admit. Dreaming was hard for a kit who could hardly even get by with what every cat had around him.
"I think too many cats don't know how to imagine a better way to live," he meowed honestly, knowing himself to be one of those cats. He could think in ideals, but he rarely imagined any for himself. For those around him. For his Clan. He'd never been given much of a chance in that regard.

Wildfire smiled gently and twined her tail with Deathwing's. "Our kits won't suffer like you did. Every generation they will have more Windclan blood in their veins. ...And if the clan doesn't accept them, it's because they're jealous...and if they exclude them in any way, I'll claw their ears off!" Wildfire huffed, her tail poofed out as it characteristically did when she was flustered. The weight of her words suddenly hit her and she lowered her head in embarrassment. "That is...if we end up having kits some day..." she mewed softly.

Deathwing looked at Wildfire with an almost startled expression on his face. It had been one thing to think to himself about having kits, but to hear the she-cat by his side--his mate--say it was a whole other thing. The tom was filled with an exhilaration he'd never felt before. Hardly noticing Wildfire's embarrassment--for he was too happy to notice anything--Deathwing nuzzled Wildfire and gave a soft purr.
"You'd make the most wonderful mother," he meowed. "No matter how much warrior blood they have, they will have your spirit, and that would be enough to earn the strongest, most pure-blooded warrior's respect."

Heat of embarrassment still flooded Wildfire, to the tips of her ears. "But what if I'm too selfish to be a good mother?" she blurted out. "Storyteller always chastises me for how selfish I am...and how standoffish I am to other cats. Can someone with those qualities really do a good job at raising kits?" Still, part of her really wanted to try. It felt different to imagine raising kits with someone she actually cared for...not doing it out of obligation to other cats or her clan.
Wildfire trilled a quiet laughter. "He also has claimed many times that I am too spirited. I'm glad that you like it." she mewed rubbing her face against his.

Deathwing shook his head at Wildfire's concerns and smiled when she talked about Storyteller. Somehow he just loved the way she related to that old cat, how much like a father he seemed to be to her. He could see the softer side of Wildfire in the way she spoke of him.
"Hey," he meowed softly. "You would make a wonderful mother, and Storyteller would be the first to say so, I'd bet. Besides, you wouldn't have to care for them alone. I'd be there every step of the way." Deathwing nuzzled her gently.

Wildfire felt her insides burn ever hotter. She didn't know what to say. "Maybe we'll wait a while...at least until the end of winter, so our kits can be born in a season where prey will be plentiful and they will grow to be strong, like their father." she purred, nudging his broad shoulders. Her head whirled with possibilities, ones she thought she would never have. Does every cat feel this way about their mate? she wondered.

"Sounds good to me," Deathwing purred, just feeling happy at the possibility. He was in no rush; he planned to cherish Wildfire until the day he died--probably even after that--so he wasn't particularly wanting to do anything but be with her. He smiled at Wildfire cheerfully. Every part of him wanted to soar through the territory like he had wings and scream out that the most beautiful she-cat in the whole forest loved him so that every cat knew it. He wondered if he looked like a restless kit about to be named an apprentice--that's what he felt like.
