Deathwing listened calmly to what Wildfire had to say. He had to admit, her advice was pretty sound. And the tom had always made it a point to collect herbs on border patrols for the medicine cat. But in his heart, he knew it just wasn't in his stars. StarClan had saved him for something else, something better. Or at least, that's what he believed. Deathwing was nothing if not optimistic.
"That's okay," he meowed, smiling at her, feeling more cheerful, "I think I'll do okay as a warrior. I will always help my Clan in any way that StarClan sees fit to let me." He said with a solemn nod. It was not his place to question his ancestors. Deathwing may not have been "Clanborn", but he had the heart of a warrior, and he knew that would carry him through.

Wildfire glanced at her clanmate and gave a respectful nod. "Do you think they know? Do they see our lives stretched out before us, a chain link of days and events carrying us up to the stars?" The she-cat asked with wonder in her eyes.

Deathwing looked up into the sky and sighed.
"You know, I couldn't say. Sometimes I feel like they don't care enough to look. But other times, I almost feel as if they're here... watching over me. Telling me that everything will be okay." He smiled slightly, his eyes shimmering.
"I guess that's what it means to have faith, in the end." He murmured softly, returning his gaze to Wildfire. "You will always have someone looking out for you."

Wildfire swept her lush tail over his, the first time she had touched another cat in comfort. "Is there some reason why everything isn't ok?" she asked softly, glancing at the sky. She was afraid to look at him.

Deathwing glanced at Wildfire and then shrugged.
"It's been hard, I guess. Since no cat knows who my parents were, there's a lot of... unrest, I suppose, about where I come from. The blood that flows in my veins. Personally, I just feel... sort of lonely sometimes. Like no one really wants me. I guess that's what happens when you're left to die in a field as a kit." He sighed.
"But I don't feel like that much anymore," he added quickly. "The worst times were when I was an apprentice. Now, I feel that I can at least serve my Clan and do something right. Then I felt pretty... worthless, I guess." He looked out over the moorlands, wondering what life would have been like if his parents hadn't left him behind.
"Sometimes I still wonder why they left me. Why I wasn't good enough for them. Sometimes I wonder why that owl didn't carry me off when I was a kit. That's why I'm called Deathwing, you know?" He grinned at her, his eyes twinkling with mirth, "I beat death twice in two moons. Pretty impressive for a kit." He sighed and looked down at his paws. Deathwing didn't really like talking about himself. He felt like such a complainer. But it was nice to talk about it for once. Especially since he felt that Wildfire would really understand.

Wildfire swallowed uncomfortably and leaned into the tom in sympathy. She felt like such a fool. Why had she known almost nothing about everything Deathwing was telling her? Memories flashed through her mind, clanmates casting Deathwing odd glances, some warriors complaining about certain patrols he was sent on...she hadn't paid it much heed. "You have more than proven yourself." she meowed softly, gazing at the tom out of the corner of her eye. You never should have had to feel that way. How many more of my clanmates have aches like this one? she wondered painfully.
"You wouldn't be the first cat to know little about your past." Wildfire meowed carefully. She had never told any cat what she was about to tell Deathwing. "Whenever I run, I always end up at the Thunderclan border. I have memories from the other side of the border...I can't explain it. I always thought my parents were Windclan, but I'm not sure. How could I have memories of another clan's territory?"

Deathwing was glad to have Wildfire there to comfort him. It was a happy change from the loneliness that usually accompanied him. When she spoke, he turned his head slightly and listened. A small smile played at the corner of his mouth. "You have more than proven yourself." He hoped that was true. He had certainly worked hard. Her next words shocked Deathwing a little. At first, he didn't know what to say. Then he sighed.
"It's hard, isn't it? Not knowing?" He murmured quietly.

Wildfire swallowed and nodded. "Especially when the clans make blood so important. It's just this thing that nags at me, and there is no real way of knowing...but I can't help but let it bother me a little." she confessed. "it's always odd how blood matters more for some cats and clans and less for others. Is blood so important for making a good warrior? Especially if they have no living kin in other clans?" she wondered.

Deathwing looked away, wondering what he could say. He would say that blood didn't matter - but what else could he say? If he admitted that blood truly was important, he'd be undermining his own existence. But perhaps it would have been better for him to have been raised by a loner somewhere. A barn, maybe. A place he would look after himself and not worry about a Clan. But the thought tore at his heart.
"I was not Clanborn," Deathwing meowed quietly, "But this is still my home. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I couldn't... I couldn't bear not being a part of WindClan." He looked up at the wide moorlands and sighed. Blood may be important to some cats... but he preferred to think that cats were made of greater.

Wildfire blinked, a gust of wind buffeting her fur. "I think maybe the clan a cat is apprenticed in is most important. The enthusiasm young cats feel, the prey they learn to hunt, the mentors they look up to...I think that is when cats fall most in love with their clans. I have heard tales of kits that were halfclan that were born in one clan and taken to another. Some of them ended up going back to their birthclan...I think that would be most difficult." she said.

Deathwing nodded.
"Probably," he sighed. "At least I've never had to deal with being torn two ways. I've always lived here, as long as I can remember." He meowed, glancing out over the moorlands. Deathwing loved the open sky and fresh scents of gorse and heather. He wouldn't trade his home for anything, even the chance to be a medicine cat for some other Clan. WindClan was where he belonged. He was sure of that.

Wildfire stood up. "You know...so, your parents weren't so great about it." She meowed. "Maybe they were injured. Maybe, for some reason, they had to leave you here. But, you're happy, aren't you? Isn't that what parents are supposed to try and do for their kits? Make them happy? Put them in a place where they can grow and thrive?" Wildfire stretched, not realizing that her words may have been out of place for her to say, or distasteful. She had a definite lack of social grace.
"Most of the time I feel that Storyteller is my father more than my real father was." she mrrowed slightly in laughter. What a jerk I am. I should tell him that. It would make him infinitely happy." The she-cat sighed softly and gave Deathwing an embarrassed smile.

Deathwing knew that Wildfire had meant no real harm by her words. But he was deeply saddened by them, knowing that it was mostly wishful thinking. When a patrol had found him as a kit, he'd been left in a fox's den, hardly a moon old, almost starved. If his parents had wanted what was best for him, they wouldn't have left him to die. He couldn't say why they hated him so much. Deathwing couldn't begin to guess.
"Then tell him," Deathwing meowed finally, turning back to Wildfire after having taken a moment to compose himself again, "Many cats don't have that opportunity to say thank you. You should take advantage of it."

Wildfire sighed and nodded. "I know I should...I just don't know how. I've never been one for much of serious conversation...until today I guess." she admitted with a weak smile. "I guess I don't know how he would react...he would find it out of character for me. He might be worried, or get defensive because he thinks I am worried about him. Oddly enough, it seems like the best i could do for him is take his advice and make him happy...live up to the dream he always wanted..." Wildfire flattened her ears in dismay. "But I just don't think I'm ready for a mate! I'm not nearly close to anyone enough in the clan..." the she-cat frowned slightly, the talk a mates making her uncomfortable. She hopped to her feet and curled her paws.

Deathwing looked at Wildfire steadily, wondering how he could help her. She seemed to be uncertain of herself. He couldn't say he'd ever been goaded into taking a mate before, so he could not quite relate to her situation. But he would try to put himself in her place and come up with some solution.
"I'm not sure you should rush into commitment," he meowed finally, "Storyteller wouldn't be happy if you were unhappy in a relationship." He added.

Wildfire sighed. "Yeah, you're right." she gave a knowing frown. "He knows me too well to not catch on anyway. Too bad I couldn't help find someone for him." she mused. "He would make a very good father. He's been an excellent mentor."
Wildfire was thoughtful for a moment, then continued. "It is odd that cats that would make good parents can have a hard time finding a mate when so many cats that are bad at it do."

Deathwing tipped his head to one side slightly.
"I've never really thought about it before," he meowed. "But I suppose you're right." He wondered if he'd ever make a good father. It seemed doubtful, in some ways. Sure he was warm-hearted and usually pretty knowledgable about the ways of the world. But with his pedigree, his unstable place in the Clan... it seemed unlikely that he'd ever find a mate, let alone have kits. Turning his thoughts away from that train of thought, Deathwing turned back to Wildfire.
"Although it seems to me as though he's found something of a daughter in you." He meowed a bit sheepishly. He could certainly be wrong, but that was what his impression was.

Wildfire started in embarrassment, something she rarely did. He surprise turned slowly to a grin. "Yes...I suppose you are right. Well, at least I hope so." Wildfire was quiet for a moment; thoughtful. "I don't know that I would make a good parent...and it is more important usually for the she-cats to be attentive than their mates." She meowed, a sly accusing grin on her face.

Deathwing smiled slightly at Wildfire's comment.
"Maybe," he meowed, with a slight shrug. "But I think it's hard to tell when one is ready for something as huge as having a family. It'll happen when it happens, I think." The dark tom stared into the sky, his gaze not really focused on anything. He'd never really considered having a family before. It'd be nice, he thought with a slight smile. I've always wanted parents... siblings... I wonder what it would be like to have a mate and kits? He'd never really hoped that any she-cat would want to be his mate before. But maybe that was just negative thinking? Deathwing thought that he might have more of a chance if he met someone like Wildfire. She didn't judge him. Deathwing glanced at the she-cat with a thoughtful expression on his face, and then quickly looked away. Yeah. Someone like Wildfire.

Wildfire scratched her ear and caught Deathwing's eye as he looked at her. "Something in my fur?" she asked, flopping over with a giggle and rolling in the tall grass. She sprawled out, the sun illuminating her fur. "This is the best." she sighed. "I love how it smells and feels out here before Leaf Fall." she murmured.

Deathwing flushed slightly and took a few moments to compose himself. He didn't want to stutter like an idiot. But Wildfire helped him save face by seemingly changing the subject. Deathwing glanced at the wide open moorlands and smiled.
"It really is beautiful." He meowed. "I can't imagine living anywhere else. Even in the tough times, there's something just so honest about the open sky." He sighed contentedly.

Wildfire lay in the glass and closed her eyes a moment, thoughts flickering through her mind. She rolled over onto her stomach and pressed her belly deep to the ground, vanishing in the grass....
Suddenly...."Oomf!" Wildfire giggled as she toppled over Deathwing and pounced off. She circled teasingly a few times before ducking back down into the tall, blond grass.

Deathwing was spacing out, and suddenly found himself on his back with Wildfire grinning over him. He blinked at her, startled, and then pushed himself up when she began circling him. The tom glanced after her as she vanished into the grass, his whiskers twitching.
"Am I a rabbit now?" He asked with a smirk on his face.

Wildfire stayed hidden and giggled. "You'd be a fine catch for Storyteller!" she teased. "and half the rest of the clan! I'd get an award!" The she-cat crept around quietly, trying not to disturb the grass that would betray her location.
This is actually fun. she thought to herself. He doesn't try to pry into my business or tell me what to do...then again... Deathwing hadn't needed to pry...she had told him everything on her own. Why had she done that?

Deathwing pricked his ears and listened to her voice. He pinpointed the location and listened for any indication of which way she was sneaking up to him. Of all the things that were said against him, no cat could deny Deathwing was a very good hunter. He picked up the stirrings of the leaves at Wildfire's paws and waited, knowing where she would leap from next.
"Well," he meowed, trying to pretend that he didn't know where she was, "Awards are not easily earned, so bring it on."
