The stream sparkled prettily in the sunlight, looking cool and clear in the heat of the day. A beautiful ginger-patched she-cat sat poised over the water. Her green eyes were attentively watching the water, her paw lifting ever so slightly and lashing down with the speed of a natural-born predator. A silvery fish flew up onto the bank, right into the paws of a ginger she-cat with a long, wiry build and stern amber eyes.
"Good catch, Lightningpaw!" Fleetingpaw said happily, her green eyes sparkling as she padded over to her sister.
"Good throw." Lightningpaw acknowledged solemnly, dipping her head in a gesture that hardly befit two sisters. But Fleetingpaw was aware of the pride and happiness sparkling inside her sister's eyes, and she smiled in response to the awkward gesture.
"Well, if you really want to improve your hunting skills, shouldn't you be the one to throw, sister?"
"Only if you want to get splashed." Lightningpaw replied in all seriousness. Fleetingpaw butted her sister's shoulder with her head, smiling at Lightningpaw's sarcastic humor.

"If you want to improve your hunting skills, you should watch an experienced warrior like me" An amused voice chimed as Laughingfox strutted into view. He glanced at the water and seemingly effortlessly scooped out a large fish and delivered a kill bite. He sat down and frowned, shaking the water off his paw with a disgusted look before gracefully licking it. "Snow is so much better." he sighed dramatically.

Lightingpaw looked over at the warrior skeptically. She knew of Laughingfox - RiverClan wasn't large enough for her not to know one of her Clanmates. But the thought of being forced to be within talking distance of him was rather upsetting to the she-cat. She knew of his frivolous ways, and therefore was rather surprised to see he was actually good at something.
"Well," she meowed tartly, "I expect that the Clan needs the food no matter what obstacles may impair our ability to catch it." She said, her eyes narrowing.
"Which means," Fleetingpaw mewed, drawing out the word 'means', "That now it's time for you to get your paws - and probably mine too - wet."

Laughingfox gave a sly glance as if to say Don't tell me you're not impressed. "You're both still apprentices, and you have quite a bit to learn. That was a good catch though, Lightningpaw. How are your skills coming, Fleetingpaw?" as cocky and obnoxious as the tom could be, he tended to be much better with apprentices. He loved teaching.

Fleetingpaw looked up at the warrior with bright, honest eyes.
"Good, I think." She meowed. "I don't miss quite as often as I used to. But I'm not very good at killing the fish after I scoop them up." She sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly. Lightningpaw glanced at her sister and twitched her whiskers.
"That's why you have me here." She meowed skeptically.

Laughingfox angled his head and nodded thoughtfully, closing his eyes for a moment. "Ok," he meowed, fluttering his olive-colored eyes back open. "Show me. We'll walk up river a few foxlengths where the water hasn't been disturbed. If I see how you are doing it now, I'm sure I can come up with a few alternatives that feel less awkward for you." Laughingfox trotted off upstream, leaving the she-cats to follow.

Lightningpaw and Fleetingpaw looked at each other, surprised. This warrior was offering to help them? But why? With a shrug and a pleased smile, Fleetingpaw trotted after the tom. Lightningpaw narrowed her eyes and hissed softly, not liking the way he seemed to feel himself superior to her. But she figured a few hunting tips wouldn't go amiss. She padded after the two, her expression still suspicious. Fleetingpaw had a little bounce in her step. She was really excited to see what Laughingfox had to teach them.

Laughingfox glanced down at the apprentices, his eyes glittering with energy and life. Not needing to glance at the sun, the young tom positioned himself so that his shadow didn't touch the water. He sat still as stone until suddenly, his paw lashed out like a viper, spearing a fish. He continued his momentum and bright the fish back towards him, dropping it at his paws, where he killed it with a quick bite.
"Alright, Riverclan apprentice. Show me your skills!" he meowed theatrically, glancing at Fleetingpaw.

Fleetingpaw watched Laughingfox's moves, trying to imagine what each move would feel like. When he looked at her, she started and flushed a bit.
"Okay," she meowed, feeling sort of small. She positioned herself a little ways upstream, watching the water with one paw raised. When she saw a flash of silver, she flicked her paw down and scooped the fish out of the water. It flew into the air and she stood up on her hind paws, trying to bring it down the way Laughingfox had. The fish ended up landing on her face and slapped her nose with its tail. Fleetingpaw squeaked in surprise, managing to catch it by the tail before it flopped back into the water. She was surprised she'd even managed that. Fleetingpaw bit down on the fish, delivering the killing blow.
"I guess that wasn't very good." She meowed, bowing her head in dejection.

The corners of Laughingfox's mouth twitched slightly into an amused smile, and he twitched his ears. "Nonsense. You still caught the fish. You are feeding your clan. The grace in which you do so will come with time. Now how about you, Lightningpaw?" he inquired.

Lightningpaw had watched both Laughingfox and her sister closely, imagining while she did so the feeling of the move, the muscles that she would use, the positioning she had to master. It was more difficult to calculate in this situation than in battle training, but she would try. She nodded to Laughingfox when he acknowledged her. Padding up to the water, she positioned herself with her shadow falling away from the stream, her paw poised for a strike. A flash of silver caught her attention and she flicked her paw into the water, her claws scoring into the fish's skin. She watched as it flipped not straight up but far to the left. With a cross sigh, she leaped high into the air and wrapped her paws around it, biting down on its neck. Tucking her head in, she landed on her back and lay on the ground a moment, dazed. Fleetingpaw raced over to her sister's side, alarmed.
"Are you alright, Lightningpaw?"
"I caught the fish." Lightningpaw tossed it down at her sister's feet, grunting as she turned and slowly got to her paws. Fleetingpaw looked at her worriedly.
"Don't fret, Fleetingpaw, I'm fine." Lightningpaw meowed brusquely.

Laughingfox was distracted from the catch as he gazed at Lightningpaw. She seemed challenging, difficult. Something the young tom wasn't particularly used to. Fierce he thought. And kinda cute. Lost in thought, Laughingfox didn't realize he was staring.

Lightningpaw shook herself out a little and drew a tongue across her shoulder. Glancing back at Laughingfox, she felt her fur grow hot when she realized he was staring at her with this weird look on his face. I'm such a failure... She thought, fuming. I can't do anything right! Lightningpaw turned and looked down at her reflection. Then she plunged into the water, ignoring her sister's voice behind her. Opening her eyes, Lightningpaw glanced around at the bottom of the river. There were fish lingering in the cool shade, and she swam towards them. They darted at her approach and she caught one in her paws, biting down on its neck. Then Lightningpaw struck up towards the surface and chucked the dead fish onto the bank, her expression mutinous.
"Caught another one." She grumbled as she struck out towards the shore.

Laughingfox was jolted out of his daze when Lightningpaw splashed into the river. He watched as she came to the surface and nodded. "When it gets dryer in later Greenleaf, fish will gather to the cooler depths of the river. It's a good thing to keep in mind...and practice." he meowed, licking a paw.
"Finesse will come with time. Right now, both of you are doing well enough." he stood up and turned to walk away.

Fleetingpaw watched Lightningpaw with a thoughtful expression on her face. She could always tell when her sister had something on her mind. Glancing at Laughingfox, she felt a bit surprised at how quickly he was leaving.
"T-thank you!" She called out after him. "For the help."

Laughingfox swished his tail in a wave. "No problem. Our apprentices deserve the best our clan has to give, after all." he meowed in his usual cocky demeanor with a wink. His gaze rested on Lightningpaw for a moment, and he wasn't too sure that he wanted to leave after all. Best to leave them wanting more. he thought to himself with an inward dramatic sigh.

OOC: *cracks up* I love Laughingfox.
BIC: Lightningpaw noticed that the tom was staring at her. It was one of those weird looks where she wasn't sure what in the name of StarClan he was thinking. She dipped her head slightly, acknowledging that she, too, was grateful for his assistance. Glancing away, Lightningpaw devoted her thoughts to the river, hoping not to look as uncomfortable as she felt.

Laughingfox just couldn't help himself. "Um...so how are the battle moves coming along then?" He asked nonchalantly, lifting a paw to gaze it his claws.

Lightningpaw's eyes darted back to the tom as he spoke. She'd thought he would waltz away like the self-satisfied egotistical type would. Oh well.
"Lightningpaw is way better at fighting than I am," Fleetingpaw responded to Laughingfox's question, glancing at her sister. "She's really quick at learning things that take me a long time." Lightningpaw inclined her head towards her sister, grateful for the acknowledgement. She always worked really hard on her battle training, and to her satisfaction it usually showed.

Laughingfox was baffled by Fleetingpaw's behavior. Why brag about someone else? "Well, I guess you'll have to keep working hard so you can be as good as your sister." he meowed. The young tom let out a yawn, uncertain as to whether he actually felt like doing battle practice with the two young she-cats. "What are your mentors up to?" Laughingfox could practically cry out with frustration that he didn't have an apprentice, yet all the apprentices in the clan seemed to not be receiving training from their mentors.
