Halflight didn't have much to do. Or if he did, it needn't been done till later. He was to keep vigil during the night because a fox had been scented near the borders and while he should have been resting up after he came back from the border patrol, he felt he had to wear himself out to sleep.
He had planned to practice some battle moves in the clearing. He preferred to practice in his free time rather than dose off.
There were a few cats in the clearing, mostly mentors and their apprentices, he hadn't been given one yet.
Out of politeness, he nodded to them, but they nervously looked away. With the softest sigh, he took a corner of the clearing and began to practice, glad the mentors were too intent on training the young cats to begin to gossip.

A silver tabby she-cat with a heavily scarred back leg padded into the clearing. She smiled at all the mentors and apprentices training, glad that the clan was doing well. Iceshard thought back to the days when she led ShadowClan before being badly injured by a fox.
She noticed Halflight training alone and padded over to him. "Afternoon Halflight" she mewed to the tom.

Halflight looked her over with his piercing eyes, relieved she didn't flinch away from his gaze. He nodded once, "Hello."
It's not that he didn't want to talk, he was just very awkward socializing.

"How are you this afternoon?" she asked. Iceshard enjoyed talking to her clanmates, always making sure she knew what was going on.

He shrugged, "Practicing." he mewed in his even voice, pulling out of his crouch to face her. He stared at her straight in the eyes, thinking how kind she was to speak to him, but somehow his gaze managed to look like an angry glare. "I've got freetime before my vigil, so I decided to practice."
That, was probably the longest sentence he had ever said.

"Would you like a sparring partner?" she asked. Iceshard was in the mood for some training, she hadn't seen a battle since she was injured. She knew she needed to brush up on her skills and strengthen her leg.

Nodding respectfully, he moved closer to the senter of the clearing so they could have some space. Every emotion seemed to be in his movements rather than his expressions, if you bothered to look closely enough. He hesitated as he slid into his crouch, "Thank you." he said awkwardly.

Iceshard followed him to the center of the clearing. She dropped into her own crouch, waiting for his move. "Anytime" she replied, smiling at him.

Snakestripe paused at the edge of the clearing, spying the two warriors ready to square off. he was slightly surprised that the clearing was occupied, but he was content to wait. He didn't want to sink his claws into a Clanmate by mistake; he wouldn't be able to stop himself. Besides, it was almost as much fun to watch a fight as to participate. Almost.

He slid and immediatly began to analyze the best way to beat her. Halflight was very skilled at noticing an opponent's weakness and using whatever he could against him. Tactical decisions.
he noticed her back leg, but knew she was a seasoned warrior and had probably worked out a technique with her damaged leg. She would be a hard opponent. Good, he didn't like flimsy warriors.
A ripple of movement washed through his pelt and muscles the moment before he launched himself. She didn't seem the type to begin the fight, so he would be the trigger.
His jump was executed flawlessly, a grace only felines held was prominent even more so in his jump. He twisted and landed on her shoulders, battering at her as if his claws were unsheathed.

Iceshard watched as he lept gracefully and felt the weight on her back. She smirked to herself. She let herself fall towards the ground, using his weight to her advantage she rolled him onto his back, lying like dead weight on top of him.

He felt the thrill he only got during real battle run through his limbs. He was stronger than her in terms of brute force, so he'd use that against her.
With a single heave, he twisted uner her weight to his side. There, he managed to gain some foothold. He pushed against the ground pushing her dragging weight away from him, buying him a few moments of precious space.
Not that he used it. As soon as he had pushed against her, battering at her narrow chest with his heavy white paws. Should be enough to wind her he thought, dodging a few of her blows, but recieving most on his shoulders since he'd kept his head ducked low.

Stardust padded through the clearing aimlessly, looking for her old mentor, Shadowmask. "Shadowmask!" she called, walking into the area where the battle practice was going on backwards. She let out a trill of surprise as Halflight and Iceshard tussled past her, and immediately crouched and flattened her ears in embarrassment for almost interfering. Why wasn't I paying attention? It's not like I couldn't see or hear them! she scolded herself. She had only been a warrior for a few days, and was desperate to prove herself.
She almost jumped in surprise again as she turned and found Shadowmask's large frame behind her, his pale yellow eyes glowing with amusement.

He was vaguely aware of almost crashing into a cat, and had recieved a few extra to divert the path from her. But then he began to concentrate fully on the fight.

Out of the corner of his eye, Snakestike saw the young warrior's surprise, but most of his attention was focused on the fight. Good moves, he thought reluctantly, unable to completely supress his annoyance at not being in the thick of the fight. Outwardly, only a quick swish of his tail betrayed his feelings. A part of his mind berated him for actually wanting to fight his Clanmates, but, as usual, he ignored it and settled himself more firmly into the soil.

Halflight caught sight of a cat watching them, he was slightly surprised. Not many cats liked to look at him. What was wrong with Iceshard? She was seeming distracted...

Shadowmask nodded back to the fight, and Stardust turned timidly to watch. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw her clanmates battling. She had never been particularly strong in practice battles, only ever wanting to fight if she had a just cause and it was really necessary. He looks so determined and confident... she thought, watching Halflight. She wished she could have that same self-assurance that he seemed to have. Stardust felt as though she was noticing him for the first time as the young tom's muscles rippled under his pelt, his eyes glancing furtively, as though he was trying to read his opponent's mind.
Shadowmask was expressionless as usual, impossible to read. He felt proud of his apprentice/adopted daughter, and was happy to see that she still looked up to him and needed him. Though many she-cats enjoyed his quiet company, he had yet to earn the love of any of his clanmates. He would love to have kits of his own, though no cat knew his thoughts, which he kept to himself almost always.

Snakestripe's eyes narrowed slightly as he caught Halflight's glance. He was surprised that the warrior had noticed him in the midst of a battle. You'd be fun to fight, wouldn't you? But he wouldn't allow himself to fight a Clanmate unless there was a real reason to. It was hard to keep himself from killing when he fought enemies; he didn't want to try his patience on friends. Still, he admired the black-and-white tom's skills.

Iceshard had seemed like a truly challenging opponent, but now her blows were half-hearted and withering. With a hard shover to break away from the still strong fall of her paws, Halflight skidded to a stop, a few tail-lengths away from her. He was breathing heavily, his ice-blue eyes alight with the thrill of a fight, and his pure white pelt dusted with black ruffled. Standing up as was proper, he dipped his head politely to the senior warrior,
"If you're uninterested in fighting me, then I'll leave you in peace."
His face, as always betrayed utter indifference and casualness, but he had enjoyed the fact that a cat could be kind to him and speak with him. Her sudden lack of response saddened the cold warrior.
He turned, spotting three cats watching him. Had he made a fool out of himself again? Or maybe he had reacted viciously? Self-consciously, he dipped his head to them, and began to pad to the corner he was in before.
