Whitestripe sat just inside of the trees that led to the ThunderClan border. A crisp wind blew, but Whitestripe raised his head to face it. His patrol had yet to catch up with him, but he was patient. He knew that Cinderblaze and the three she-cats they'd recruited would catch up in their own time. For now, he would wait.
A rustling behind him alerted him to a visitor. By scent, he identified Cinderblaze without turning. "Are they others behind you?" he asked calmly.
Cinderblaze paused by his friend's shoulder. "Yeah, they're somewhere behind me. You know how some specific she-cats can be." The gray tom's whiskers twitched as he looked behind him to see if the others had caught up yet.

Stardust walked with the patrol, not speaking because she was lost in thought. "Maybe we can utilize our environment like Thunderclan does. They aren't used to fighting in boggy areas, are they? But we know where and how to step on the ground so our paws don't get stuck in the mud." she meowed thoughtfully after a time.

Ambersun and Fairlight padded side by side, their pelts almost brushing. The two sisters, despite their differences, were close. Indeed, in some ways they had been raised as if they were littermates, when in reality Fairlight was older. Cats generally trusted Ambersun because she seemed like the type - and probably was - to say anything she was thinking truthfully, not hiding any details. Fairlight, however, was cold and reserved, and due to circumstances surrounding the death of her brother, Bearkit, Fairlight and her father had always faced suspicion. This was the reason that the two sisters were close. There was no judgment, at least none that could hurt, and although they argued, their love for each other could not be doubted.
Fairlight looked up at the sound of Stardust's voice, quiet and contemplative. At first, the she-cat wasn't sure what her fellow warrior was talking about. Then she began to put the pieces together, glancing at the space where the border would soon be visible.
"I suppose," she mewed, "That these pine needles would prick their paws before they'd get that far." She spoke with a twinge of sarcastic amusement in her voice. Ambersun scoffed softly, though her eyes shined with merriment.
"Man, they wouldn't be able to get past ShadowClan warriors! Huzzah!" She leapt forward, crashing through some bushes. Fairlight heard a squeak and rushed forward to see what had happened. All she found was Ambersun splayed out on the ground in a clearing where Whitestripe and Cinderblaze were standing nearby.

Neither tom jumped at the sudden arrival of the the other cats. They hadn't realized how far behind their Clanmates had dropped. Cinderblaze faced them while Whitestripe continued to watch the border. "There you are! I was beginning to wonder if you'd gotten lost in your own territory." he purred in amusement.

"Or stuck in a bush," Fairlight meowed sarcastically, eyeing her sister as she licked some burrs from her thick pelt. Sighing, Fairlight turned her attention to her Clanmates. Whitestripe and Cinderblaze seemed at ease, at least - even amused. She was glad they weren't miffed that it had taken the two she-cats longer to get here. If she hated one thing, Fairlight detested tardiness. She was grateful that she didn't have to feel guilty about it, though. Guilt was not an emotion that Fairlight favored.
"Well, are we going to go or what?" Ambersun demanded, flicking away the last of her burs with a deft foreclaw.

Stardust flattened her ears, unsure whether Fairlight thought her idea was stupid or not. Having just been made a warrior, Stardust was still insecure about her abilities and ideas. She twitched her ears in surprise as Ambersun crashed through the undergrowth and upon her other clanmates.
"Are you alright?" Stardust mewed gently, walking up beside Ambersun. She wasn't sure if the she-cat had heard her, or if it even mattered, when she suggested that they get moving. Stardust gave an excited nod and padded closer to Whitestripe and Cinderblaze.

Cinderblaze smirked as Whitestripe gave an approving nod to the three she-cats. "Now, you all know why we're here. We're watching the ThunderClan border, searching for anything suspicious. Stray scents, signs of prey-hunting, whatever you may find. You can never be too careful with these disgraceful cats." Whitestripe looked back to ThunderClan territory. "If we meet a patrol, do not engage unless they start anything."
Cinderblaze huffed, rolling his eyes and winking at the she-cats. "If they do start something, however, there is no need to hide your claws. Remember, we are ShadowClan, and we should be feared."

Fairlight narrowed her eyes as the toms spoke, feeling a bit offended. Ambersun glanced at her sister and noticed her unease. Taking action immediately, without a moment's thought, she laughed and nudged her sister's shoulder.
"What, are we apprentices? We'll shred the ears of those little ThunderClan weaklings if they so much as look at our side of the border!" She meowed cheerfully. Fairlight glanced at her sister, silent. She knew that Ambersun was just speaking out her feelings in an easygoing way. And she was grateful for it. Fairlight knew that she could be too serious, and was always happy when Ambersun saved her from having to say anything about what she felt.

Stardust's heart fluttered in her chest as she imagined her first real battle. Even though she was slight of build, she had learned well under the tutelage of her large, strong mentor, Shadowmask. Still, if it were up to her, she fight Thunderclan with her clanmates. She glanced over her shoulder, half wishing that her mentor would appear out of the shadows and give her some encouragement.
She shook her head. No. You have to do this alone. You're a warrior now. Your clan is counting on you. she chided herself. "Thunderclan seems to never think they have enough land. Let's just hope they don't drop on our heads!" she mewed.

Whitestripe frowned, wondering on the best course of action, but Cinderblaze made his mind up for him. "I don't think they'd be able to without somehow distracting us. Each time they've used that in the past, they always left at least warrior one the ground to try and keep us in one spot. If we find anyone on our lands, someone needs to keep back and check the branches above us. Any volunteers?"
The gray-masked warrior snorted and meowed, "Always the strategist, aren't you?" Cinderblaze glared half-heartedly at his friend before Whitestripe continued. "I'll keep watch. You lead. Sound good to you three?" They both turned to the she-cats for their opinion on the set-up.

Ambersun glanced at Fairlight, her expression expectant. Fairlight frowned, not liking the way her sister assumed every cat should know of the pastimes she involved herself in. But then, Ambersun had always been naive. She didn't understand that Fairlight liked to keep some things secret.
"Sounds good," she meowed decidedly, earning a look of exasperation from her sister. Ambersun let out a huff and glanced at Cinderblaze.
"Well, let's just go." She said impatiently.

Stardust's tail flared up in the air and she suddenly disappeared into the brush. She returned moments later with a small mouse. My first catch as a warrior! she thought, her pale blue eyes beaming. "Sure, we can handle this patrol, right?" Stardust meowed to the two other she-cats, feeling more confident than she ever had.

Both toms were smart enough to realize that maybe, just maybe, they'd been a bit patronizing about the patrol. Whitestripe looked away in acute embarrassment while Cinderblaze chuckled awkwardly. "Eh... Sorry about that... We weren't trying to block you guys out or anything... But, eh..." the light gray tom laughed nervously and nearly jumped when Stardust jumped away into a bush.
When she reappeared, both toms looked impressed. "I didn't even smell that..." Whitestripe meowed. "Good catch, Stardust!"

Stardust felt embarrassed, but glowed at the praise of the two older toms. She scraped some earth over her prey, hoping upon hope that she would remember where it was later on. She still didn't know the borders very well. Whenever she went to them with Shadowmask, she was always more focused on looking across to the territories on the other side.
She flicked her ears at a loud rustling sound and quickly angled her head toward the border. "What is that?!" she mewed.
Grizzlyclaw, one of the largest Thunderclan toms, was ambling along the border, refreshing scent lines. His fur was covered in earthy debris, and his missing tail made him look more like an oddly colored bear cub than a cat.
"He's so big!" she breathed. "I couldn't imagine him swooping out of the tree like an owl!" she chirruped in laughter.

Fairlight's eyes narrowed slightly as she saw the tom walking along the border.
"Don't be so quick to rule him out," she said, "Any cat can climb a tree. And the bigger they are..." She turned and glanced at Ambersun. Her sister caught the look and smiled.
"The faster they fall." She mewed softly, and there was something secretive about the way the two sisters looked at each other.

Grizzlyclaw snorted and glanced toward the border, eyes narrowed. "Just make sure you keep to your own side." he snarled, squaring his large shoulders.
Stardust jumped slightly at the tom's voice. She hadn't expected him to notice the cats. He must be downwind of us. she thought. Sure enough, a small breeze was carrying their scent across the border. I'd hate to go into a battle against him. she thought with a shudder.
