A lithe calico she-cat padded towards the forest. It was a peaceful day so Songstar decided to go check on the border. Her forest green gaze was focused in front of her, ears pricked for any sign of an intruder. I wonder if anyone else is out today she thought to herself.

The large tom-cat followed his leader, his tail low and the wind sweeping through his pale brown fur. Amber eyes alternating between the she-cat before him and the ground beneath his paws. This area of the forest was specially tricky, since many of the trees' rots twinned and curled beneath the ground, and one mistaken paw-step could end with his face in the mud.
The chirping of birds along the branches above was soothing, and the light twinkled from between the leaves, patching the earth with bright light and shadows. "Have you sent any other patrols out today, Songstar?" He mewed, just loud enough so only the leader in front of him could hear him.

Songstar was startled out of her thoughts by a voice behind her. She had forgotten that she invited Sparrowfeather to join her. She was glad that the tom came. "I sent out a hunting patrol earlier" she mewed "but this is the first border patrol."

"Oh." Was the tom's only response. Personally, he liked hunting patrols a lot more than border ones. However, it was Songstar who had invited him, and he hadn't been able to refuse because of two reasons. One, she was his leader, and he simply couldn't say "no." And secondly, he was madly in love with her.
He kept padding behind her, keeping a steady pace as they made their way deeper into the forest, keeping an eye on their surroundings.

Songstar knew that Sparrowfeather preferred hunting to patrolling borders, but she wanted his company. She tried denying her feelings for the clan flirt but she couldn't she was hopelessly in love with the tom. "So how are you today?" she asked, slowing her pace to match Sparrowfeather's.

The tom turned to look at his leader as she fell in beside him and smile slightly. "I'm fine, dear Songstar, thank you for worrying about my well being~" He mewed in a sing-song voice, his pearly white fangs baring in a wider smile. "And what about you?" He asked, yellow eyes creasing into half-moons with mischief mixed with his overly sincere smile. "We can't have our leader falling sick, or having a bad day. No no, the clan leader must be kept happy at all times." He jested.

Songstar felt herself smiling back at Sparrowfeather. She used to hate his obvious flirting but now she came to like it, most of the time she wished it wasn't just flirting but something more. She rolled her eyes at his jest, and shook her head slightly. "I'm doing well" she mewed "and you'll be glad to hear that I'm not ill or having a bad day."

"Of course you aren't." Sparrowfeather mewed, this time grinning. "You are with me. No one can have a bad day or catch some illness when I'm around. Specially not pretty she-cats such as yourself, my leader."
He had been watching her expression the whole time, somewhat mystified by them. He wasn't paying attention to his paw steps, and in a moment he sidestepped as he put his paw on a rock. The warrior caught his balance before he fell onto Songstar, his previous words almost put into jeopardy. However, this did not save him from brushing his pelt against hers, which sent shivers of delight shooting down his spine.
"Agh, I apologize dear leader, I almost damaged your pretty self because of my carelessness." The tom meowed, feeling slightly self-conscious but making a joke over his stumble.

Songstar felt heat rise to her cheeks at his comment. He had told her she was pretty many times and every time it caused her to blush. "Thank you for protecting me from illness and bad days then" she mewed, a smirk on her maw.
She noticed him stumble and felt her heart pick up speed. She was relieved when he didn't fall, and felt a warm tingle throughout her body from where his pelt brushed hers.
"It's alright" she mewed. "Are you alright?" she asked, more concerned about him then about herself.

The tom laughed a bit as she answered his play with a smirk, his whiskers twitching with hilarity. "I'm quite alright, I just have to watch my step more closely." He mewed, a bit glad that she had asked and still holding back a few laughs.
It was incredibly entertaining watching the she-cat's variety of expressions, each more different than the last. Still smiling like a stupefied dog, the warrior started padding again, his bushy tail held high behind him. "I'd protect you from bad days and illnesses any day, Songstar." He called back, his words more serious than what he had actually intended.

Songstar smiled brightly at the tom's laughter, glad that he wasn't hurt and well enough to joke. She watched as he padded ahead of her, his tail held high, and a soft smile graced her maw. His words made butterflies appear in her stomach. "I'm glad" she mewed, catching up to him.

The tom didn't say anything for a while, his eyes wondering around the forest, wondering where they were headed. Birds chirped and flew around, the most daring ones flying just a few paw steps away from him, as if tempting him.
This wasn't a hunting patrol however, and he actually wasn't in the mood to chase after birds. "Where are we headed, Songstar?" He called over his shoulder, lowering his tail so he could look at her.

Songstar was enjoying the peace of the forest and the company of the cat she loved. It was turning out to be a great day. She listened as the birds sung and some mice scuffled a few foxlengths away. She looked at Sparrowfeather when he spoke. "To the border and along it for a while" she mewed.

The tom nodded, and turned his head back around. He tried not to look too much at her, since the usual expressions he used to conquer other she-cats crumbled away when he looked at her. He could hear his own voice chuckling at the back of his mind. He knew he'd turn out like this?
He never planned to actually fall in love with someone, and even less his clan leader. This could only mean trouble, right? Sparrowfeather didn't know.
