Emeraldkit struggled to keep up with his mentor at they left camp. He was small for a Riverclan kit, and he had already been up all day excited about the other apprentice ceremonies. He glanced up and saw the half moon, then realized he was falling behind again and scurried to catch up to his mentor's side.
"Do I have to do anything special?" he panted, hoping his voice didn't reflect the nervousness he felt. "Will Starclan accept me, Flameheart?" he mewed. Suddenly, entering the life of a medicine cat seemed much more frightening and overwhelming to comprehend.

A ginger tabby she-cat padded along the familar path to moonpool. Flameheart slowed her pace to allow Emeraldkit to catch up. She had her green gaze fixed on the half moon hanging in the sky.
She looked down to her apprentice when she heard him speak. She could tell he was a little nervous, much like she was on the journey to get her name. "There are a couple things you have to do" she mewed "but I'll explain it when we get there."

"Oh...ok" Emeraldkit meowed, trying to hide his disappointment that his mentor didn't explain the ceremony in more detail. "Flameheart...when did you find out that you wanted to be a medicine cat? Did Starclan visit you? It must be harder to decide to be a medicine cat when you have the option to be a warrior." Emeraldkit wondered aloud. There was no bitterness in his voice when he talked about Flameheart's option to be a warrior, though. The young tom had accepted the path of a medicine cat to be his own and stopped resenting his almost completely failed eyesight in his blue eye.
"Does Starclan only visit you when things are going to go wrong?" he asked curiously.

Flameheart smiled at Emeraldkit's curiousity. "Well StarClan didn't exactly speak to me" she mewed "it was more of a calling." "You see I lost my parents when I was very young and I knew that they went to StarClan" she explained "so I chose the path of the medicine cat because of the closeness to StarClan and my desire to help." "To me this was the easiest choice, to others this is the toughest choice to make" she added.
"StarClan speaks to me in both good and bad times. Usually they speak to me to warn of impending danger" she mewed "but sometimes my parents come a speak to me about all the good things."

Emeraldkit brightened. "I saw the spirit of my mother, Shellfur, right after she died...and I thought I could feel her a couple times in camp. I hope she comes and speaks to me like your parents do to you!" he meowed excitedly, his heart full of longing.
"I'm excited to learn about all the herbs, but the thought of giving advice to our clan leader makes me nervous." he confided. "Did you find it hard to not tell anyone about your dreams and visions? Am I allowed to tell you about mine?" he meowed, suddenly nervous that he might get a message from Starclan that he wouldn't be able to understand.

"It's a bit difficult at first, but you learn how to keep your dreams a secret" she mewed. "And you are allowed to discuss your dreams with me and Brackenstar" she mewed "it makes it easier to interpret the meanings."

Emeraldkit heaved a sigh of relief. "That's helpful." he meowed. The young tom's thoughts wandered off, until he became more aware of his surroundings. A rocky incline loomed in front of him and his mentor. He sighed. His small feet were tired, and they had already traveled such a long way. How much farther could the Moonpool be?
No wonder medicine cats only make it here once a moon! he thought to himself. He felt like a crotchety old elder for thinking such a thing, and scampered up the incline with a little burst of energy. His eyes sparkled with awe at the sight below him.
"This is it, isn't it?" he breathed in fascination.

Flameheart followed the familar slope that led towards moonpool. It was nearly time to welcome Emeraldkit into the world of the medicine cats. She smiled at the expression of awe on her apprentice's face. She rememberedher first visit to moonpool and her complete awe of the beauty of it.
"This is the moonpool" Flameheart mewed, looking down at the familar landmark. She began to pad down the slope towards the water.

Emeraldkit forgot all of his exhaustion. He scanned the magical landscape with his one good eye, memorizing it with his heart. The moonpool glowed with the twinkling of stars, and something more, it seemed. Glancing at it, Emeraldkit wouldn't be surprised if it was a piece of the moon and sky itself, bottomless and infinite. His heart danced in his small chest as he finally came face to face with his destiny. He tried to follow Flameheart in a dignified way, even though he wanted to bound down the slope towards the water.
He padded up soundlessly beside his mentor and looked into the water. His pale white coat glowed the same bright white as the moon. He thought he could see the faint, starry outlines of cats wreathing around the stars in the pool, but when he glanced up at the sky, it was crisp and clear-- a black infinity freckled with stars only.
He glanced up at Flameheart expectantly, completely speechless.

Flameheart smiled as she watched Emeraldkit study the moonpool, a look of complete awe on his face. She knew he was seeing the many star pelted ancestors reflecting in the water. She turned her gaze to the sky and noticed the moon was now high in the sky. "It's time to start the ceremony" she mewed, returning her gaze to Emeraldkit.
"Emeraldpaw, is it your wish to enter the mysteries of StarClan as a medicine cat?" Flameheart asked, beginning the ceremony.

Emeraldkit fixed his look of awe on his mentor and nodded, a feeling of calm sweeping over him. "It is." he meowed as Flameheart started the ceremony. His paws tingled with the energy of his ancestors, which seemed to vibrate in the stone beneath him and in the stars above him. He stole a glance at the moonpool, unsure of what to expect. Would his ancestors just show up here? Or could he only see them in the pool?

Flameheart smiled at the young tom before turning her gaze to Silverpelt. "Warriors of StarClan, I present you with this apprentice. He has chosen the path of a medicine cat. Grant him your wisdom and insight so that he may understand your ways and heal his Clan in accordance with your will." Flameheart recited the speech that had welcomed her into the ranks of the medicine cats many moons ago.
"Now just copy what I do" she mewed. With that she folded herself comfortably next to Moonpool. She stretched her neck and took a drink from the pool, feeling the familar icy coldness wash over her.

Emeraldpaw's eyes glistened with the reflection of the bright stars of Silverpelt. His tiny heart fluttered as lay next to his mentor, just barely touching her pelt for comfort, and lapped up the icy water. It tastes like the sky he thought, his body filling up with a calmness he had never felt before. Emeraldpaw was afraid that he wouldn't be able to sleep, but once he closed his eyes, he was out almost immediately.
Emeraldpaw nervously blinked open his eyes to find himself in a thick forest, rich with newleaf growth. Patterns of sunlight danced on the forest floor. I can see with both eyes! the young tom thought to himself in amazement. He whirled around to tell Flameheart the exciting news, but his mentor was no where to be seen...

Flameheart blinked open her eyes and was greeted by the familar forest of StarClan. She smiled at the silver she-cat and ginger tom standing a few foxlengths away. She bounded up to the two StarClan cats and nuzzled them. "Silvermist, C.J" she mewed happily.
"Hello Flameheart" both her mother and father said. She purred deeply. These kind of visits were her favourites, when she got to see her parents again.

Emeraldpaw flattened his ears, feeling insecure without his mentor beside him. He swallowed down his anxiety and padded forward through the forest. "Hello?" he meowed, his voice hardly more than a whisper.
"Emeraldkit" a voice purred. Emeraldpaw ran through the trees to see his mother, her body perfectly healed and her form looking young and energetic around the shimmer that surrounded her. "I'm Emeraldpaw now! I'm a medicine cat apprentice!" Emeraldpaw meowed happily, nuzzling his mother. He suddenly felt anxious and ashamed and gazed at his paws.
"What is the matter, little one?" Shellfur meowed, licking the top of his head. "I went blind in one eye, mother. I'm not special like you thought. I'm....crippled..." he sighed painfully. Shellfur pushed her muzzle into her son's forehead. "You are special, Emeraldpaw. Being blind doesn't change that. You always had a gifts that would make you a good medicine cat, and that is why you were chosen, not because you went half blind." she consoled, purring as she comforted her son. "I couldn't be more proud." she stepped back and glanced and her son, her olive eyes glittering with pride. "I must go now. The others want to speak to you."
Emeraldpaw opened his mouth to protest, but his mother was already gone. He sighed, both in relief and sadness. It was hard to see his mother here, knowing that he wouldn't see her again when he woke up. It was also wonderful to know that she was proud of him, and that he was doing the right thing with his life. "I'll make you even more proud." he whispered.
Emeraldpaw turned around and suddenly found himself surrounded by shimmering cats. A large, white furry tom stepped forward, his eyes different colors just like Emeraldpaw. "I am Whitebeard." the old tom meowed. "Welcome to Starclan. We have been waiting for you for some time, young Emeraldpaw." The tom smiled as he padded up to the young white tom and bent over him. "You are not the first and will not be the last cat who is different from your clanmates who will help to make a difference in your clan." he meowed, his deep voice confident and comforting. "We are here to welcome you as a medicine cat apprentice, and to receive your first message from Starclan." he bellowed.
