We are a bunch of softhearted sweeties at heart. It's a blessing and a curse, but when we're sitting here looking at the eight lives we have in our home at this moment, it's heard to imagine things any other way.
Menina
When we first began to feel the pangs of loneliness of a house without a pet, we knew we wanted a cat. This was back in 2008. Menina was our first (members of SP at that time will remember I fawned over her for several months.)
Sammie and Menina
Next was Sammie, who was by all rights mine, but as of late she doesn't want much to do with me. She's a feisty little feline, but has moments where all she wants to do is cuddle up as close as she can get.
Mittens
Following those two, we didn't get a new cat until this January. Mittens was our first boy and we thought he'd get along okay. Ha. He is picked on nonstop and he pays us back for it. He scared the life outta me by jumping at me as I was walking through the living room.
'MitMit' and 'Marshy'
More recently during the summer we took in Marshmallow, a stray kitten from outside. A GORGEOUS tabby siamese (there's a new coat for anyone looking to make a new charrie) longhair, he is the playful one of the bunch, and I have torn up hands to prove it.
Marshy ROTFLing
Now Marshmallow's mother, Mama Cat (she's had at LEAST four litters since we moved here in 2009) decided to have kittens in my sister's room. Mind you, we feed these strays and pet them, and let them come in to cuddle when they want to, but she did not typically come in. She gave birth to five, lost two, so three kitties remain.
Yeah, we let them stay.
Mama Cat and the three amigos. When my siblings get back they'll get proper names, but for now the white is Fluphin, the dark tabby is Dwinky, and the light tabby is Foophle.
Marshmallow had a sister in his litter, a dark tabby we didn't take in (which we now regret). Sadly, she died today at roughly 3:00. She was only about five months old.
Scamp, only this morning.
We're all a bit heartsick for this poor little kitten which we lovingly named Scamp. My first encounter with her left me with a hand of scratch marks. My last was a cuddle on the couch only this morning.
The lesson from all this is this: There are SOOO many unwanted cats out there. If you have a female, _please_ have it spayed. Please. It's not just the fact we have (in our neighborhood alone) probably close to 40-60 strays, but also that they will go on to breed more unwanted animals.
Mama with 4/5
Much as we like to imagine them teaming up and having these adventures like in the books, that is _not_ reality, and I hope you all can understand that a strays life is very hard, full of dangers, and they usually end painfully.
RIP Scamp,
and the other two young lives lost this summer
