Shadows and streaks of moonlight dappled the ruined flooring of the empty twoleg nest. it had been abandoned for moons and moons, so no cat was afraid of finding twolegs there anymore. But the place still had an eerie feel to it, keeping new apprentices away. But any cat not afraid to enter certainly wouldn't be prepared to find a fox there.
In the darkness, a dark, reddish ball of fur was curled up, watching silently for anyone to enter. It was highly unlikely, however-hardly any cat came there at that time of night. Emerald's namesake-his eyes-scanned the area. His sharp sense of smell told him cats were either nearby or had been resently. How am I going to get a decent meal when there's nothing to choose from? he grumbled to himself.
The tiny sound of something scampering across the broken stone caught his attention and he snapped his head around to see a mouse, scurrying its way towards him. A menacing smile spread across his long mussel as he watched his new found prey sneak closer... and closer...
Quick as lightning, he pounced. The brown creature seemed glued to the spot, not moving even as he saw his predator jump above him. In a few heartbeats, Emerald was sprawled across the ground, turning the mouse over looking for a place to sink his jaws into.
Once again, his ears picked up on pawsteps, but this time, they were heavier. Much heavier. "Cat," he murmered in his odd, accented voice. He returned to his place in the shadows, his mouse forgotten and left in the middle of the nest.
