Sighingwind heard a noise in the bushes. He started, turning his head to see a small tabby she-cat padding from the thickest undergrowth. Her expression was somewhat shrewd, with the whiskers above her left eye arched.
"Sorry to interrupt," she meowed with a deep, alluring voice. Sighingwind felt a shiver run down his spine. There was something about the way she looked at him that made him nervous. He sat up, his forepaws resting over Cookie's frame, shielding her.
"Who are you?" He asked, his eyes narrowing. The she-cat smiled.
"Kaosu," she replied, "I'm looking for someone at the moment. But I know you couldn't help me." Her meow was half-interested, half-bored. It was hard to tell her intentions from her face or the tone of her voice. Sighingwind's eyes narrowed. He didn't trust this "Kaosu". He couldn't say why, but she seemed menacing.

Cookie lay at Sighingwind's side, completely lost in her thoughts. She didn't notice the presence of the new she-cat when she emerged. She finally noticed her when Sighingwind was no longer lying beside her but sitting up, his paws resting protectively on her.
She looked up to see the newcomer, she seemed very suspicious. Cookie didn't trust her one little bit. "Well if we can't help you, then maybe you should move on" she mewed.

The she-cat smiled, and that smile made Sighingwind's blood run cold in his veins. It wasn't that her smile wasn't convincing. But there was a cold aura surrounding the cat, making her gesture more horrifying than calming.
"Perhaps I should," she meowed, "But before that, I'd like to know your names, as I have told you mine." She smiled again, and Sighingwind frowned.
"Sighingwind," he almost spat. Kaosu's expression didn't change.
"Oh, the Medicine cat's kit," she said, and Sighingwind's face twisted in horror.
"How did you...?"
"I knew Petal, though we weren't exactly on good terms." Kaosu's expression was icy. Sighingwind swallowed, feeling as if his mouth had gone dry. He didn't know what to say. This cat was dangerous - she'd proved that. He unsheathed his claws and pinned his ears back against his skull.
"I want you to leave. Now." He snarled.
"Oh, you don't want your girlfriend to hear your sob story?" Kaosu hissed with a snide wrinkle of her nose, her eyes mocking. Sighingwind bared his teeth, wishing he could tear his claws across the wretched cat's face. But he reined in his temper. Protecting Cookie from this malicious cat was more important than anything else.

Cookie watched the exchange silently. She wasn't planning on telling Kaosu her real name. She was also curious to how she knew Sighingwind's mother and as to why it provoked such a violent reaction from her mate.
"The names Lily" she mewed, lying easily. "Now that you know our names, I think its best you leave" she said, unsheathing her claws.

Sighingwind glanced at Cookie, wondering why she gave the cat a false name. But he supposed it was smarter. He should have done that - it would have saved him a shock. Kaosu glanced from Sighingwind to his mate, then chuckled.
"Very well, then. I will go." She turned and took a few steps, then paused, "Oh, I almost forgot. Petal wanted me to tell you that she was sorry. She seemed to think that your accident was her fault." The she-cat said, looking over her shoulder. Sighingwind frowned.
"Why would you know about that?" He snarled. The cat's smile didn't reach her eyes.
"Pain can be a wonderful conversation catalyst." Sighingwind snarled harshly, but Kaosu only laughed.
"You can be mad all you want. But that doesn't change the fact that you abandoned her, does it?" She smiled coldly.

Cookie listened to the conversation, she was so confused. Who's Petal and why is the mention of her making Sighingwind angry? she asked herself.
"I think its time for you to leave" she mewed, getting to her paws, claws unsheathed. She flicked her tail back and forth threatingly.

Kaosu looked at Cookie and grinned.
"Alright Lily," she mewed scornfully, "Anything you like. I think my work is done here." She met Sighingwind's strong gaze and gave a twitch of her whiskers, as if she were amused by his petty emotions. Then with a flick of her tail, the she-cat dove into the brush, leaving the two cats alone. Sighingwind took a shaking breath, trying to regain his composure. He couldn't get the she-cat's cold gaze out of his head. Had she really meant what she'd said about Petal...?

Cookie retracted her claws and took a deep breath when the she-cat had finally left. She leaned into her mates side, drawing comfort from his presence and feeling her heart beat slow.
"I didn't like her" she mewed "She creeped me out."
She was still curious about how the she-cat had known Sighingwind and information about his past, but refused to push the topic. He'll tell me if its important she thought to herself.

Sighingwind frowned.
"Yeah. Just the fact that she'd gotten Petal to say so much..." His expression was worried now as he remembered Petal, her wise-cracking jokes and fiercely loyal personality. He remembered her cheeky grin and the way she showed him the wonders of every bit of his world, from the forest to the grungy alleyways of the Twolegplace. He owed Petal so much... the thought that harm might have come to her was unbearable.

Cookie nuzzled Sighingwind, noticing his discomfort. "Are you okay?" she asked, concerned for her mate. She wondered what about Petal bothered him so much, and why the she-cat seemed to be so significant. But she didn't want to push the subject, in case her mate became even more uncomfortable.

Sighingwind shook his head.
"Petal was like my mother... If anything happened to her... it would be my fault." He meowed, distressed.

Cookie felt her heart break. Sighingwind seemed so broken, and it pained her. She placed comforting licks on his head, and purred, trying to calm him. "I'm sure she's fine" she mewed.

Sighingwind sighed, closing his eyes.
"I hope so," he meowed. It was all he could do. There was little he could hope to do, really, when he hadn't seen Petal in moons. It had been before he'd even met Cookie... Back when he was headstrong and stubborn. Sighingwind wished he could go back in time and at least say he was sorry to the cat that had been a true mother to him. Especially now that the menacing cat called Kaosu had appeared, making him remember Petal and her stubborn courage.
