At the moment the Clans are struggling through a period of severe famine. Birthing and mating is considered against the Warrior Code in the majority of the Clans because of the apprentices and warriors being overworked trying to find food in what seems to be a desolate forest.
Many newborns are being killed because of the concept that they're just new mouths that the Clan can't afford to feed. Queens have to run away from their Clans just to keep their kits alive and many revert to being kittypets for the source of food.
These are truly desperate times for the Clans; what else will they do to keep their members fed?
