The abandoned Twoleg nest looked forlorn in the dim morning light. The old wood creaked sadly in the breeze, and the scuffling of mice seemed to lament the decaying of the broken down den. A beautiful white-and-ginger she-cat made her way into its shadows, sniffing the air. Crouching low to the ground, the she-cat stalked forward a few spaces and then leaped onto an unsuspecting mouse.
"Nice catch!" Turning, Fireflight smiled at her brother, Liontail. The broad-shouldered tom followed her into the nest, his blazing amber eyes calmly taking in her kill.
"Thanks," she mewed. "But you know, mousebrain, you probably just frightened off any prey within foxlengths of this place."
"And the scent of blood wouldn't do that?" Liontail retorted.
"Good point I guess." Fireflight acquiesced. She wondered if the other members of their hunting patrol would arrive soon.

Skydancer had caught a sparrow, he scraped dirt over it and trotted towards the rest of his patrol. Shaking out the dead twigs and leaves from his pelt, he took in Fireflight's catch with a single gaze. "Nice catch," he mewed, also taking in Liontail's empty paws. "We're not on a hunting patrol, but we won't deny any mouse or vole that crosses our path," he chuckled in his light lilting voice.

Liontail glanced at Skydancer with a somewhat dry expression on his face.
"Oh?" He meowed, "Well that never occurred to me." He said sarcastically.
"Liontail, behave." Fireflight scolded. She glanced at Skydancer, who was leading their patrol.
"Should we head back to camp, then, since we've finished with the ShadowClan border patrol?" She asked him, meeting his gaze with her bright brown eyes.

He flicked Liontail's shoulder, trying to convey that he hadn't meant any offense. But, listening to Fireflight, he didn't think they should reutrn just yet. He'd rather take the whole morning securing his Clan's borders' than leave early unsure.
"We'll go back in a little bit," he assured her, matching her gaze with his liquid-honey eyes. "I'm almost sure I caught of whiff of fox scent near the old twoleg nest. I'd like to confirm it."

Fireflight nodded. Glancing at Liontail, she gave him a long, level stare and then sighed.
"We'll follow your lead." She meowed to Skydancer. Liontail gave her a look and then padded to her side. Fireflight brushed dirt over the mouse she'd caught and then looked up at their patrol leader. She wasn't adverse to following orders like her brother could be. Fireflight preferred having someone else lead, since she liked to be more of a support. Liontail was more rash, and liked to have control, but she'd at least got him to shut up for now.

Nodding, he took point, leading them closer to the nest. Skydancer didn't particularly mind Liontail's annoyance, but if it interfered, only then would he do something about it.
The breeze suddenly shifted, and with it it carried the strong pungent odor of fox. They had found the den . "Do not take on the fox alone." he hissed softly, every bit of him alert and wary. "There may be more than one, so we bring it down together."
Lowering himself into something similar to the hunter's crouch, he approached the nest, the two ginger siblings flanking him.

Liontail snorted softly.
"Yeah, as if." He meowed. Fireflight flicked his nose with the tip of her tail, earning a glare from him. Slinking forward, she made sure to keep near Skydancer's shoulder, prepared to back him up if he needed. With a last huff, Liontail followed them, his ginger fur rippling with strength. He may have been annoying sometimes, but he certainly was handy in a fight, even if he could be a big clumsy at times. Fireflight watched the den closely, her whiskers twitching as she listened and waited.

He slunk closer, feeling the air get heavier with every pawstep he took towards the abandoned den. Then, he set a dark paw onto the first step of the nest's entrance.
As soon as he had done it, all hell broke loose. Or fox, he added as an errant afterthought.
The fox skidded through the nest's entrance, snarling viciously, intent of killing the cats, or driving them away.
Hissing, he whipped to on side to avoid the fox's direct onslaught. Too late, he realized her had exposed Fireflight who was covering his right. Dammit! He lunged in the direction perpendicular to the fox's path, hoping to knock it away.

Alarm flared up in Fireflight's mind when she saw Skydancer was planning on walking into the den. Is he mousebrained?! She thought, her eyes wide. Liontail hissed under his breath, thinking the same as his sister. When the fox leaped out of its den, Skydancer moved out of the way, leaving Fireflight as the beast's main target. Liontail snarled and leaped forward, slashing at the fox's eyes at the same time Skydancer lunged at it from the side. The fox snarled angrily, and Fireflight saw her opportunity. She lunged to the side and leaped higher than most cats could. Latching onto the fox's shoulders, she began pummeling its back with her hind paws and tearing her teeth deep into its neck, sending it into a frenzy but also wounding it considerably.

Skydancer was furious. Angry at himself mostly, for committing such a stupid act, and angry at the damn fox, for simply being.
With feriocity equal to the fox's he concentrated on shredding as much as much of it as he could, his ultimate goal, the jugular where the flow of blood was thickest.
Skydancer was aware of Fireflight attacking it's back and legs, and f Liontail attacking it's face and eyes.
The fox yelped in pain from Fireflight's attack, tossing it's head back trying to shake her off. There, Skydancer saw his chance.
Angrily, he aimed his blows at it's soft neck and chest. The fox instantly turned to him, it's eyes clouded with fury and pain. He darted away as it snapped at him, shouldn't be too long now before it decided to run....

The fox whipped around, and Fireflight lost her balance for a second. Thrown to the side, she tumbled into the den and found herself sitting in a horrible darkness filled with the scent of fox. Rolling on her side, she slipped her legs underneath her and started to get up. Suddenly she heard something and turned. Her eyes had been adjusting to the dim light, and she stared in horror as two huge fox cubs looked at her with hungry eyes.
"Great StarClan!" Fairflight squeaked, turning to run out of the den as the two fox cubs followed her.
Liontail wasn't alarmed when Fireflight was thrown off. She'd recover on her own, and he had to focus on keeping the fox distracted. Suddenly he heard his sister's voice rising in panic, and turned to see two cubs following her out of the den. Foxdung! Liontail cursed silently. The fox saw his distracted state and snapped at him, narrowly missing his neck. Liontail skirted to the side and then lunged towards the two cubs, wanting to protect his sister.

"Oh great," muttered Skydancer. There was no way the fox would run now if it was just him. "Liontail, get over here now!" He hissed attacking the fox furiously to prevent it from counter-attacking. "I'm sure Fireflight can handle cubs on her own!"

Liontail slid to a stop, hissing under his breath. And leave my sister?! He thought furiously.
"Go," Fireflight told him sternly. "I can handle this." Now that she could see, it was easier to figure out what to do. Lunging forward, she swept one of the cubs off its paws by ramming herself into its front legs. It squealed in shock, causing the mother fox to become distracted. Liontail saw his chance and darted forward, leaping onto the fox's neck and burying his teeth just below its jaw, where the skin was smooth and less clumped up with fur. Fireflight clawed at one of the cub's eyes, her ears flicking back to check if the mother fox was coming or not.

Skydancer had caught a glimpse of the cubs. They weren't anywhere near as large as the mother and still had their young soft fur.
He concentrated on the mother fox. Could he and Liontail drive it off? It fought with a mother's ferocity, and there were only two of them. He deliberated for a moment, the cubs would be easier to chase down than their mother, and not nearly as hard to beat as her also. Didn't matter now though, certain he would regret this later, he bit the soft large ear of the animal, feelings the soft warm fur in his mouth intermingled with some blood. Ugh.
It yelped wrenching it's head back. Skydancer's grip slipped a little, but he bit down harder, his teeth almost meeting each other in a clamp, and held on clawing the smoother fur near it's jaw.

Liontail hooked his claws into the fox's throat, trying to tear into its flesh through all the fur. It balked away from him, letting out deep throaty noises of pain. The fox shook her head forcefully, trying to dislodge her attackers. The cubs listened to their mother's cries and then turned and fled towards their den. Fireflight lunged after them, blocking the entrance with claws raised and teeth bared. The cubs whined pitifully as their mother fought to dislodge Liontail from her throat. It finally managed to shake him off, and immediately ran towards its cubs, trying to wrangle them away from the cats and into the forest.

His eyes narrowed as he saw what the mother fox attempted to do. Those cubs could not leave. They would only grow to be vicous like their mother. But, to kill them would be to invoke their mother's wrath. And he had wounded warriors...
"Let them go." he rasped.
He didn't want to let the cubs go alilve, but there was little he could do. Firelight and Liontail had to be tended to.

Fireflight aimed a last clash slash at one of the cubs and hissed under her breath as the mother herded them away, towards the territories that belonged to no Clan. Liontail padded up to her side and sniffed her fur, looking for injuries. She turned and blinked at him warmly.
"I'm okay, furball," she meowed with a touch of affection in her voice, "Those fox cubs had more of a bark than a bite."
"Can't say as much for the mother." Liontail meowed, wincing as he glanced at a long scratch on his shoulder. It would heal quickly, since it was shallow, but it still stung like heck.

He trotted lightly to them, not sniffing them over yet assessing for any major injuries. Luckily, they had none, only plenty of shallow scratches.
"You both did incredibly well," he mewed solemnly, looking at the ginger siblings. He turned his amber gaze towards Liontail, "I apolagize for pulling you away from your sister," his gaze slid to Fireflight's, "and for putting you in harm's way."

Fireflight tipped her head to the side, her expression calm despite the adrenaline still pumping through her body.
"It is our duty to protect our Clan first," she meowed. Liontail looked at his sister and frowned, almost as if he disagreed. But finally he turned to Skydancer and nodded gravely.
"At least the fox is gone for now." He meowed. "We should head back to camp and report this to Phadestar." Fireflight nodded in agreement, letting out a small sigh. She hated the feeling one got after a good scuffle. It made her restless and raring for more action, with little possibility of getting any.

Skydancer almost laughed seeing Fireflight's expression. He could relate to how she felt, but he had little trouble surpressing those feelings. And he was glad he could kinda sorta come to terms with Liontail.
"Alright then, let's head back." He mewed composing his face.
Turning, he shook his pelt slightly, his eyes narrowing oh so slightly as he felt the sting of the stretching cuts. Shallow scratches weren't lethal at all, but they were more of a pain than deadly wounds...

Fireflight walked alongside Liontail, thinking. She was surprised when her brother wandered off, but relaxed when he returned carrying the prey they'd hunted. She supposed they could always eat it now, since they were on a border patrol, but she didn't really feel like it. The fight had left her with little appetite. The forest scents were comforting, though, and she couldn't ignore the wonderful feeling of being under the canopy of trees. Why any cat would live anywhere else, Fireflight couldn't even begin to fathom. She loved ThunderClan and everything about it. Liontail looked at his sister and knew that she was appreciating the scenery - he'd often teased her about paying more attention to her Clanmates every now and then, but he respected the fact that she was so observant. She always seemed to love the tiny things that Liontail never even noticed.

Skydancer turned, hearing Liontail stray off, wondering if something was wrong. But, he what he saw, was Liontail, carrying his prey, completely at ease next to his sister, as if what she was doing was entirely normal.
But, to Skydancer, the epxression on her face was anything but normal. She seemed so happy, surrounded by their territory. The deputy had never known a cat to share the same strength of devotion he felt to ThunderClan, but to him it seemed now that he simply hand't looked hard enough.
He trotted away, fetching his own prey, while at the same time giving her a few extra moments before moving on.

Liontail paused, watching Skydancer go in search of his own prey.
"I can carry some of that," Fireflight meowed, gesturing to the mouse and the blackbird in his mouth. He shook his head, shrugging. It wasn't hard for him to carry large loads, and he preferred to carry all of it himself if he could. Fireflight sighed and glanced up at the treetops. She really felt like climbing today. Maybe after they reported to Phadestar, she would go hunting and catch a few squirrels.

"Let's go," mumbled Skydancer around his mouse. Setting off at a brisk pace, he headed towards the direction of the ThunderClan Camp.
As the neared the hidden Camp, the scent of cats grew stronger. He entered the stone hollow, relaxing as the shade of the high walls engulfed him. He was home.
Skydancer placed his mouse on the fresh-kill pile and turned to the two siblings. "Have those wounds looked at, alright? I'm going to report to Phadestar." His intense pale amber gaze rested on them a second longer, and then he turned heading toward's his leader's den.

Liontail felt calmed as he strode into the ThunderClan camp. His sister trailed behind him, staring about as she always did. It was impossible to tell what she was daydreaming about. Liontail glanced at Skydancer as he spoke, feeling a bit mutinous after being dismissed like some nosy apprentice. But a flick of Fireflight's tail calmed him. He blew through his lips, then padded towards the fresh-kill pile to drop off the prey. Fireflight paused, glancing around her. She wanted to leave for hunting as soon as possible, but she really should get her wounds checked. With a resigned sigh, the she-cat made her way after Skydancer, since the leader's den and the medicine den were in the same area.
