Icepetal flushed a little when Brackenstar bent down to wash her paws for her. She flicked her tail in surprise, but remained still, a small smile pulling at the edge of her mouth. He was so sweet... She would never have thought it before she'd got to know him, but it was true. Purring happily, Icepetal leaned forward and licked his muzzle affectionately.
"That sounds wonderful," she said, beaming up at him with a pleasant smile on her face.

The furs along his spine prickled up a bit, not in threat, or anger, but a rather big wave of emotion. Blinking a little, Brackentar stood still where he was, the feel of Icepetal on his muzzle tingling slightly.
He shook his head, and smiled back, getting to his paws. "Let's go then," he mewed, taking a few, secure steps forward. "There is a good spot under the shade near the nursery."

Icepetal nodded, standing up quickly. Every moment she spent with Brackenstar seemed to be precious. A part of her worried that this was a dream - one of those heartbreakingly wonderful dreams where she'd wake up and feel that her world was sad and lonely again. But she knew it couldn't be a dream. Even in her wildest dreams, she'd never have imagined something like this happening. As she made her way towards the tree, Icepetal paused to nod at Brambletail and smile. Her brother tipped his head slightly and then smiled back. Feeling relieved, Icepetal trotted forward to join Brackenstar beside the tree.

The leader didn't see the exchange between the siblings as he made his way across the camp. The spot under the tree was free, thanks to StarClan, and slightly separated from the nursery. He wasn't one to say, but being in closed quarters so long brought out the gossipy in queens; he wasn't about to give them more prey to chew on. He'd rather keep his conversations private, specially now.
He layed down, the soft mewls of kits and the quiet murmurs of the queens calmed him. It reminded him of his mother, and he smiled slightly at the memory.
The leader looked up to see Icepetal come to join him, and the smile grew slightly wider.

Icepetal curled up beside Brackenstar, giving her surroundings a quick once-over. It was a habit she'd formed growing up, mostly because she had always been worried about being attacked when Brambletail was out. One nice thing about becoming a warrior was that she'd finally been trained how to fight. Brambletail had tried teaching her before, but he wasn't very patient and she was certainly no quick study. Icepetal tipped her head to the side slightly, listening. One of the strangest things about of the camp - and the most wonderful - was the nursery. Icepetal had few memories of her mother, and most were rather unpleasant. She wondered what it would be like to be raised in such a warm, loving environment. It must be so much better... She thought sadly. Maybe I could have become as nice and smart and talented as most of the warriors are here if I had been born in the Clan. Even though her parents were of RiverClan blood, Icepetal had never known the Clan before they'd found it together some moons ago. Sometimes she wished she could have been normal. But Icepetal couldn't begrudge her life. She'd gone through many things, but they had led her here, hadn't they? And being beside Brackenstar was all the happiness and love that Icepetal needed. She turned to him and smiled, feeling comfortable as she rarely had before.
"I love you," she whispered softly, nuzzling him gently.

Brackenstar had already been dozing off when Icepetal spoke and nuzzled him. Her warmth had been too overly soothing, but her words brought him back to reality as if he had just fallen into a river. He turned to look at her and smiled, dipping his head to give her muzzle a gentle lick. "I love you, too." He mewed softly, his tail curling around her lower half, as if holding her to him.
He had been wondering this ever since he allowed her and her brother into the clan, but had never really thought of asking. Looking at her a few seconds before, however, staring off as if deep in though, prompted him. "Are you happy here?" Brackenstar asked, the depth of his amber eyes clouding slightly as he waited for her answer. "Not just with me, but with the clan."

Icepetal looked up at Brackenstar, startled by his question. No one in the Clan had asked her that. They just seemed to want to pretend like she'd always lived in RiverClan, or at least that's the feeling they gave around her. None of them had ever asked about her past, or what she thought of life now. It was difficult to put into words the feelings that had long slumbered inside her heart, unspoken save to herself.
"This place is the only true home I've ever known," Icepetal meowed finally, feeling the truth of her words in her heart, "I feel... good here. Happy. It was strange at first, getting used to everything... But to me, this is where I belong."

His eyes cleared up once again as he took in her words, and he closed them for a moment as he took a breath of air, letting it out slowly as he opened his eyes again. The leader brushed his muzzle against her neck, murmuring almost inaudibly, "You don't know... how glad that makes me feel." He took in her scent as her white fur buried his nose, and it smelled fresh, sweet, just like he would describe her.
He leaned his neck over hers, his eyes looking over her head at the rest of the camp. "I asked you this," Brackenstar began, "Because now more than ever I want you to feel part of the clan, part of us. Part of me."

Icepetal blushed, but it was a happy reaction to Brackenstar's words. They filled her heart with joy, making her feel as if she had discovered paradise. To her, who had known nothing but a brother's love, the feelings that she experienced with Brackenstar were precious and beloved. She felt overwhelmed by the feelings that coursed through her body, but she was able to reply, nonetheless.
"There's nothing I want more in the whole world," she murmured. "To be part of RiverClan. And... to be one with you." A small smile pulled at the corner of her mouth as she closed her eyes and drank in Brackenstar's scent. It was like river-water and dewdrops, deep and yet sweet, filling her with a warm and tingly feeling. Icepetal let out a small sigh, feeling love and contentment washing over her, nearly consuming her.

The leader could feel the heat in her body rise from her neck, and he knew she was blushing. He smiled, knowing that she couldn't see him from where he was, and purred in contentment. A deep, low purr that rose from well beneath the concavities of his chest and reverberated throughout his whole being.
RiverClan's leader hadn't been this happy in a long time.
Licking Icepetal's ear, he took his neck from over hers and layed it between his paws as he closed his eyes. A smile still played on his muzzle; he knew Icepetal would still be there when he waked up.

Icepetal rested her muzzle in between her paws and stared at Brackenstar as he fell asleep, a happy smile plastered on her face. She wasn't very tired, but the she-cat was quite content to rest there and watch her mate. She thought about the fears that she'd always had as a young cat - fears that she would end up with an abusive mate, be unloved, like all of the other she-cats in the pitiful Clan her father had constructed. She felt so blessed to have Brackenstar beside her. And Brambletail would be very excited for her, she knew that. He loved her too much to begrudge her any ounce of happiness. Icepetal closed her eyes. She relaxed and felt the pull of sleep strongly enough to doze off, enjoying the shade and the warmth of her mate's fur.

Brackenstar's breaths became deeper, slower; his bushy tail was still, and his whiskers only moved with the gentle breeze. It had been a long time since he'd slept so peacefully, since he'd actually rested well.
It had always been the same, he'd always retire to his den when the moons was highest. He had to see to every little aspect of the clan before he allowed himself to rest. Experience had taught him, though, not to push it to far. A tired leader was a bad leader, and so he set a line. However, he never fully rested. There was always that little something that kept pulling at his consciousness. Had all the cats eaten? Had everyone come back to camp safely? Had they enough food to feed everyone? Had other clans tried something against them? Things like this made him toss and turn in his moss bed, and he would get up more than once during the night to check on the clan.
He'd stand at the arch of his den, which was just a big enough cleft on a rock. The insides were spacey, but they got quite cold during winters. It was at those times when Brackenstar would gaze at his clan, hearing the murmurs of the queens from the nursery, giving their kits a midnight meal. Other than that, everything was quiet. His gaze would flick to the fresh-kill pile then, not so fresh by the time, but still making sure there was enough for a few bites next morning for some of the youngest cats. He'd then turn back, and pad into his empty den.
Now, however, lying there curled up against Icepetal, the leader didn't open his eyes for quite a while. He didn't turn and toss, nothing pulled at his mind. He was soundly and peacefully asleep. Everything was well.

Icepetal looked about her at the camp, remembering. When she had first come to RiverClan, she had been frightened and meek, only an apprentice. All her life, she'd been afraid of one thing after another. She had relied on Brambletail to protect her from their father, other cats of their "Clan"... After a time, it had grown too much for the siblings. When their camp had been destroyed by Twolegs, the siblings decided they would leave in search of their parents' birth Clan. It would have been better, Icepetal had always thought, if RiverClan had never known who they were. But Icepetal had always resembled her mother too much. It hadn't taken any cat long to realize that their parents were traitors that had tried to ruin the Clan. But Icepetal had never wanted the legacy of her father - and neither had Brambletail. It had been difficult, though... sleeping in a tiny makeshift den, in the cold and wet, shivering next to her brother. It had been hard to gain the trust of her Clan. Her apprenticeship had lasted longer than was usual - even her brother had waited, even though he was more experienced than a warrior when the two apprentices joined the Clan. They never talked to their new Clanmates about what they'd experienced growing up. Icepetal had been haunted by her father's memory for so long, but sitting next to Brackenstar, she felt as if she could finally relax. Closing her eyes, she drifted off to sleep. For the first time, she didn't dream of her mother or father, or the evil eyes of the rouges that had been a part of their bloodthirsty Clan. For the first time, she dreamed of something happy - Brackenstar.

~~~~~
His vision came into focus slowly, the objects around him looking slightly foggy and blurry. Brackenstar blinked a few times, and everything cleared. Raising his head, he stifled a jaw-cracking yawn and flicked his ears as his maw closed shut. A recently awoken leader turned to look at his mate, and found her endearingly curled at his side.
He couldn't help but smile.
She, like him, had peacefully fallen asleep, and the sight of her so trusting, so carefree next to him brought him much joy. He knew some vague details about her past--he had gone to great extents to find them--and knew how hard it had been for her to adapt to clan life. Seeing her so accustomed to being in his clan relaxed him, and gave him a vague feeling of accomplishment and pride.
He bent his head slightly and flicked his tongue between her shoulder blades, smoothing down a bit of snowy white fur that was sticking out slightly. "My Icepetal," he whispered, "I love you."
Icepetal's dream was beautiful. She was sitting beside the river, feeling as if stars were shimmering all around. Her mate came up beside her and pressed his nose into her fur. She felt his tongue stroking between her shoulders, and a warm purr filled the she-cat's throat. He looked so handsome in a dream - the sort of handsome that was not far off from reality, but that gave the world around her an unrealistic feeling. It was too perfect, too happy. Somehow, Icepetal preferred the real Brackenstar to the one her mind conjured up. She felt her sleep wearing off and opened her eyes. Glancing up, she looked at Brackenstar and wondered if she'd been dreaming when she'd heard a soft "I love you" in his deep, rich voice. A small smile tugged at the corners of her mouth as she looked up at him.
"Me, too," she murmured, a purr filling her chest with warmth. He really was so much better in the waking world. He was better by her side.
He didn't get tired of hearing it, even if they had already said the same words to each other at least ten times already during that single day. Those three simple words still made his heart pump faster and a smile grow on his maw.
The leader looked at his mate for a few seconds longer, taking in her sweet and fresh scent before saying. "Well then, we can't sit here all day." Which was quite regretful, he wanted to spend more time with her, but there was a clan to run and everyone had to work. "Help me look around so we can set up another border patrol. Ours ended a bit in disaster."
"Okay," Icepetal meowed. "But you should take it easy. I don't want your injury to get worse." She said, trying to muster up enough solemnity to make her words very strict. She wanted him to relax a bit more - which she knew was probably impossible. But that was part of what Icepetal loved about Brackenstar. She'd always admired the way he was devoted to his Clanmates. There was something so special about a cat that loved his friends and family that way.
The leader chuckled, running his tail over her back in a single flick. "Yes, Icepetal," The tom said in a humored voice, trying to sound as if he were addressing a leader, attempting not to smile as he started padding. "I'll be careful." He added, this time a bit more serious, for he knew that his mate's concern for him was genuine. "It's not much anyways, just rounding up some warriors to go should be enough. Flameheart would have my skin hung in her den if I join the patrol with my paw like this." Brackenstar turned and looked at the she-cat over his shoulder, examining her with his eyes slightly narrowed.
She had been there when they were fighting the fox, and she had gotten a bit beaten up as well. He could clearly see the scratch on her shoulder and the few dirtied patches of fur that they hadn't got to washing just yet. No, he rather have her rest the rest of the day. "You don't have to go, either. You may stay here; and if you wish, you can join a hunting patrol."
Icepetal nodded. She didn't want to stay cooped up, so she probably would go hunting with Brambletail later. Making her way into the clearing, the she-cat searched for her brother. She found him by the river, staring into the waters with thoughtful pale amber eyes.
"Brambletail!" Icepetal called, feeling a rush of warmth flooding her chest as she approached her brother. Brambletail started and then turned, his expression hard to read.
"Hey, Icepetal," he meowed. "Have a nice day?" Icepetal hesitated.
"I went on patrol with Brackenstar... and we ran into a fox." She meowed gravely.
"Are you both okay?" Brambletail's eyes widened with concern as he checked his sister for injuries, not waiting for her reply. She smiled at his fussing and purred.
"I'm okay, mouse-brain. Brackenstar... his injury is... worse. But it'll be okay." Icepetal murmured. Brambletail glanced back up at her, his expression worried.
"He's not forcing you to keep him company or anything, is he?"
"What? No!" Icepetal frowned.
"Sorry. I just thought you didn't like him much, so I was confused to see you spending time with him." Brambletail tipped his head to the side, as if he were still very perplexed by her behavior. Icepetal took a deep breath.
"I do like him," she meowed. "I love him." Brambletail blinked in surprise. Then he smiled.
"Then I'm happy for you." He touched his nose to his sister's ear, and Icepetal felt so happy, she wondered if she might keel over from lack of reality.
