Emberpaw looked at Radge. "Thanks" she mewed. "But you need your rest too" she said "if you can't take care of yourself how are you supposed to take care of us."
She scanned the offered prey and selected a plump looking mouse. She took a bite and nearly goraned in satisfaction. She was starving, she could probably eat a fox at the moment.

Periwinkle wasn't having a good time. Besides the fact that she had limited senses, her brother kept moving her. She mewed loudly in protested, wanting to be able to push him back, but he was bigger than her.
"Oh they'll just get along great." Radge mewed, noticing them shoving one another.

Emberpaw looked down at their kits fondly. "I'm sure they will" she mewed.

Radge picked up the kits and spaced them a little further apart. "Well, they'll be sure to love their mother." He said, nuzzling Emberpaw.

"They'll love you too" she mewed, nuzzling Radge. She looked back at him a smiled. "I'm so glad you rescued me" she mewed honestly.

"Thank you Emberpaw. And the pleasure is all mine." He said courteously, kneeling on his front leg. He put too much pressure on his tender paw though and sucked in air with pain. "Dratted squirrel..." He muttered.

Emberpaw giggled at Radge's formality. She stopped laughing when she heard Radge's hiss of pain. "Are you alright?" she asked "what happened?"

"I tripped over a squirrel tail when I was running back and twisted it. I'll be okay." Radge said. "It's not too bad. Except when I put too much pressure on it. That's why I didn't get here..." He looked away, unable to say the rest of his thought.

Emberpaw just leaned in and nuzzled him. "Then you need to rest" she mewed. "And you need to stop blaming yourself" she said in a serious tone "it wasn't your fault."

"I know, I just feel bad... I wanted to be here for you." Radge said. "If that squirrel wasn't dead I'd go kill it." He huffed. Periwinkle gave a loud mew and he looked over. "Well I would!" He said, as if she understood him.

"Well, for the whole thing I mean." Radge clarified. "It's a special day." He was excited for moons about this, and he was a little upset he didn't get to see the whole thing. He missed Periwinkle entirely. Not that she seemed to hold it against him.

"At least you made it" she mewed. "And we have a lot more special days to look forward to" Emberpaw added. She hoped that Radge would've been there for the whole thing but she was thankful that he was there for most of it.

Emberpaw smiled as he listed off everything they were going to see. "We're going to see it all" she corrected, looking at their kits again. She could tell that they were going to be tough cats some day.

"Oh yeah, of course, I just meant I wasn't going to miss anything anymore." Radge would do whatever it took to be there for his family. Anything. He'd lay his life down in a heartbeat.

Emberpaw smiled at her mate. She leaned back into him and let her eyes fall shut. She was content to just lay there in the comforting presence of Radge and their kits.

Radge watched Emberpaw falling asleep and sat beside her, aware of everything going on outside the burrow. It was a peaceful night, and the moon was now past it's peak in the sky. He watched as Periwinkled stirred in her sleep before calming her by stroking her with his tail.

Emberpaw opened her eyes again. She turned her head to look at Radge. "You need to get some sleep" she mewed. "I'll keep guard and you sleep" she said "I know you haven't been really sleeping lately."

"No, it's fine. You need your rest more than I." Radge said. He was worried about her, and considered trying to find Flameheart for advice. He just didn't want to leave Emberpaw unguarded. Then he had an idea...

"Stubborn" she muttered before closing her eyes. She wanted to argue with Radge but she didn't have the energy. She settled next to Radge and let herself slip into a peaceful slumber.

Radge waited until she was asleep before taking off. Hard as it was with his paw, he managed to reach the barn rather quickly.
"Taz?" He called. "Taz?"
The hay moved and a head popped up. "Radge?" Taz was getting fluent in catspeak and growing up a lot.
"Hey Taz... I need a favor."
"Anything!" Taz said, bounding out of the head and coming to in front of Radge, his curly tail wagging a mile a minute.
"I need you to look after Emberpaw for me." Radge said.
"Oh sure! Is she okay?" Taz said.
Radge started walking back and Taz followed. "She just had kits."
"Kits?"
"Umm... little cats, children." Radge said, trying to make Taz understand. "Like when you were little..."
"Oh!" Taz understood now.
They headed for the burrow and Radge gave him firm instructions not to go inside or do anything, just stand guard unless Emberpaw gave him further instructions. Taz nodded and was sitting like a statue as Radge headed for Riverclan.

Emberpaw's eyes shot open when she felt the presence of danger. She immediately noticed that Radge was gone and opened her maw. The strong scent of dog overcame her. Her heart began to beat wildly in her chest as she curled tighter around the kits. She knew she couldn't do much to defend them, she was still tired and sore. She prayed that Radge would be back soon and that the dog didn't scent them. "Please come back soon" she whispered.

Emberpaw's expression changed from one of fear to one of confusion. She recognized the voice from somewhere and then it clicked. It was Taz, the little furball could communicate a lot better now. "Taz?" she mewed questioningly.
