"Sounds good to me." Midnightfur said, rising. She would follow him wherever he wanted to go. She was glad she seemed to be making a friend, even if it was unexpected. She wondered what Starkit would think of him. Midnightfur intended to introduce them when they got back to camp.

Brambletail nodded with a slight smile. He waited for her to catch up to him and then walked beside her, close enough to feel her warmth, but too far to touch.
"So, how's the kit you're looking after? Starkit, I think?" He asked curiously. He'd heard enough gossip from his sister to understand the circumstances that had fallen upon Midnightfur. He wondered if she loved the kit like it was her own. He'd never experienced many fond parental attachments, or none that other cats would consider to be so.

"Starkit," Midnightfur nodded as she confirmed the name. "And she's great! I'm really proud of her. She is still little yet, but is very commendable." Midnightfur just adored Starkit, which was why she was so gracious with her praise, but Starkit wasn't a bad kit at all.

Brambletail smiled at the she-cat's warm praise of her little charge.
"I'm sure she is. How old is she now?" He inquired, wondering how long Midnightfur would have to wait until she could be free of the nursery. He wondered if it was hard to be cooped up when she hadn't even had kits herself. He thought it must feel unfair at times, but then, he liked the wide open forest and time to himself, so he probably wasn't one to say.

((agh, Flameh hasn't finished her bio. I'm taking a guess))
"Three moons." Midnightfur said. "But she's got more energy then I had at that age, and certainly more than I have now." She preferred sitting quietly, but Starkit was usually up and moving.

Brambletail smiled a bit to himself, thinking of his days as a kit. He'd been quite a pawful back then.
"Well it's good to have her to take your mind off of things, I'm sure." He meowed in his deep, soft voice. He looked at Midnightfur closely, his head tipped to one side. He wondered what it would be like, to lose such a close friend. He'd lost his father, yes, but their relationship had been... complicated.

"Yes, she certainly does that." Midnightfur meowed. "I love her very much. I just worry about her. She doesn't even know about Dappledpath yet. What if she... what if she stops loving me because I'm not her real mother?" She had just admitted her biggest fear, and was shocked that she did.

Brambletail looked at Midnightfur and then away, into the brush. His mind wandered over his past, everything that had happened in his family. He couldn't stop a small frown from forming on his brow.
"Sometimes blood isn't what's important. Starkit should appreciate the fact that you love her and that you've been the one to care for her." He smiled, trying to encourage the she-cat. He didn't quite understand the relationship between a queen and her kits, let alone the relationship Midnightfur had with Starkit. But he felt enough from his own past to have confidence and belief in his words.

"I hope you are right Brambletail." Midnightfur said. She wondered briefly how different the day would be turning out if she hadn't run into Brambletail. She liked that she had. Liked that she was now with him.

Brambletail smiled.
"Me, too," he said with a cheeky grin on his face. He looked up at the sound of something rustling. He could just see a finch hiding in one of the nearby trees. He twitched his whiskers.
"Wait here a sec, would ya?" He asked, smiling at her, his eyes shining. He snuck forward, climbing up a large tree beside the one with the bird in it. He crept along the branches silently, his eyes intent on his prey. From his tree, he crouched, judging the distance, and then leaped. The bird let out an alarmed chirp then fell silent as he hooked it from its perch, falling down with his catch and landing with a grunt into some bushes that completely obscured him from view.

"Brambletail?!" Midnightfur dashed forward, worried her new friend might be hurt. Had she really just thought that? Then again, she was thinking of him as a friend. He was kind and patient. Not to mention friendly.

Brambletail popped his head out of the bushes, his eyes looking huge. An embarrassed smile passed along his features.
"I'm fine, I'm fine!" He said, wincing. He looked behind him and then at Midnightfur, appearing undecided.
"Wait for a sec," he meowed apologetically, ducking back into the bush. There was a sound like tearing claws then he popped out of the push with the bird in his jaws, looking a bit uncomfortable but generally unhurt.

Midnightfur chuckled as she strolled over and used her tail to brush bits of dirt and leaves off of him. "Well nice catch... sorta." She laughed.

Brambletail shrugged as he set the bird down.
"The landing's usually much smoother than that." He meowed with a playful flick of his tail.

"Well I hope so. It wouldn't do for you to break your leg hunting." Midnightfur meowed.

Brambletail scoffed.
"Me? Break a leg? Never!" He meowed with a pouty look on his face, as if hurt that she'd even suggest such a thing.

"You may be an amazing cat Brambletail, but you are still perfectly capable of getting injured." Midnightfur spoke without thinking. She looked away. "Sorry, mother instincts... comes from looking after a kit."

Brambletail smiled slightly.
"Ah, that's fine. It's sort of nice to feel... well..." He stopped, looking distant. He dug his claws into the soft ground, trying to wrestle with old feelings resurfacing inside of him, raging and bringing back memories he'd rather have forgotten.

"Cared about?" Midnightfur offered. She knew the feeling of not being cared for, having to care for yourself. "Yes it is."

Brambletail looked at Midnightfur, his expression serious. For some reason - maybe it was the memories, maybe it was something else - he couldn't just smile like he always did. He turned away from his companion, staring out over the surface of the lake, wondering, watching.
"Yeah." It was all he could think to say. All he had the heart to say.

Midnightfur worried she had offended him and went over, but maintained a polite distance. "Brambletail? Are you alright?" She asked. Oh there I go again, mothering him! Why do I always ruin new friendships? She thought.

Brambletail turned his attention back to her, his expression hard to decipher.
"Just a bit lost. It's nothing." He meowed, forcing a stiff, sad-looking smile. He didn't want Midnightfur to hate him or think him boring. He wished he could stop thinking about everything that had happened, all the things he and his sister had suffered through. He wished he could outrun the shadow of his father. But he knew that some cats still harbored hatred towards Stonetail, and had turned their eyes to his son, thinking that Brambletail would turn out to be a bloodthirsty traitor, too. But he wasn't. He would never be that.

"I'm sorry Brambletail." Midnightfur said. She wasn't entirely sure why she was apologizing. Because of her poor choice of words? Because of her poor company? Because what little she knew about Brambletail made her assume he was probably still very heartbroken and an outcast in the clan. He didn't deserve that though! He was kind and sweet with a good heart. He wasn't a traitor.

Brambletail glanced at Midnightfur and smiled slightly.
"No need to be sorry. It's not your fault." He meowed. It was true - the fault belonged mostly to his parents. And for a long time, Brambletail had cursed them bitterly for the way things had turned out. But, in the end, they gave life to him and his sister, and while they'd never been the nuturing type, they'd taught them both important skills. Brambletail struggled to accept these feelings and put aside his anger. But it was hard sometimes.

"What's anyone's fault? I was simply sorry to see you so down." Midnightfur said, giving her ear a bath as she waited for Brambletail to be ready to move again. She didn't mind just sitting there, she just wished there was something she could do to make him happier.
